Artists-in-Residence Programme at Abode Bombay & Abode Jaipur

Abode Boutique Hotels, known for its design, presents the second edition of its Artists in Residence programme, hosted in collaboration with For Art and Culture in India (FAACII). The first edition was with Michal Raz in 2022, who spent two weeks at Abode Bombay.

This season brings two painters into residence across Abode Bombay and Abode Jaipur, where they will live, work and respond to their surroundings, developing new artwork over the course of their stay.

The two properties offer distinct environments in which the artists will work. Abode Bombay in Colaba is shaped by the lively, cosmopolitan energy of the city, a contemporary space that draws on Bombay’s layered, ever-shifting character.

Abode Jaipur, by contrast, is rooted in heritage, built on the philosophy of ‘nothing new, everything local’, where local stone, reclaimed wood and hand-finished lime plaster are worked by Rajasthani artisans into a space that is quietly contemporary yet deeply of its place.

Design has always been Abode’s guiding pillar, though it speaks in a different voice at each address.

Mary Pye

Mary Pye is a London-based painter, born in Manchester in 2001 and a graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art (BA Fine Art, 2021–2025). Her practice is slow and meditative, built through layers of pigment laid down, shifted, withdrawn and allowed to settle. She has exhibited in London, Mumbai and New Delhi, including at Bvlgari x MeSo Ventures in Mayfair and Between Worlds at The HiLight London. Her work is held in the collection of the AdP Museum of Contemporary Art in Ahmedabad.

During her residency across Mumbai and Jaipur, Pye's intent is not to depict either city literally but to let their visual rhythms, textures and traditions enter her imagination unconsciously, responding to her experience of living within them, and allowing that experience to shape her evolving painterly language. She hopes that instead of seeing literal streets, people will feel the emotional and spiritual weight of the real presences of Mumbai and Jaipur in her works.

Parnika Mittal

Parnika Mittal is an Indian artist whose practice explores memory, identity and belonging through vibrant colour, layered compositions and fragmented, faceless figures. Having lived across cities and countries, she treats home as fluid - an emotion rather than a fixed location. She has previously undertaken a residency in Norfolk, England.

During her time at Abode Bombay and Abode Jaipur, Mittal intends to continue developing her ongoing body of work. Belonging, drawing on the cities' distinct energies - Bombay's contemporary pulse and Jaipur's heritage and craftsmanship and to explore how place, people and shared experience quietly shape memory and identity. Through this process, she hopes to honour the places, people and moments she encounters, allowing them to become part of her evolving painterly language.

The Abode Artists in Residence Programme will take place at Abode Bombay from 21 August to 14 September, followed by Abode Jaipur from 15 to 27 September.
