Backed by Managing Partner Neha Anand, KGV’s latest investment marks a further expansion of the group’s F&B portfolio 

Neha Anand, the Managing Partner at Kings Group Ventures (KGV), the UAE-based group that manages and advises businesses around the world, is pleased to announce the company’s most recent investment – in Gourmestan, the gluten-free confectionery and boulangerie started by Chef Shivani (an alumna of Le Cordon Blue London) in 2018. 

Anand is passionate about food and has spent her professional career finding, funding, and founding food businesses across the globe. She spearheads multiple national and international food businesses under KGV and is also focused on lifting up female founders and guiding them through the male-dominated F&B industry. In May 2022, Anand also launched the flagship location of their newest brand Jun’s, a Progressive Asian modern dining experience in Downtown Dubai on the famous Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard. 

Via this investment, Gourmestan will continue expanding across India, as well as focus on its international debut, as it looks to soon launch its first store in Dubai.

BOCA Dubai introduces sustainable and waste-free cocktail menu

BOCA’s Omar Shihab commissioned an artist to design the new illustrated menu

BOCA Dubai, Gault&Millau UAE 2022’s Sustainable Kitchen of the Year, has launched a new cocktail menu inspired by local and regional ingredients and an obsession with reducing waste in the bar. The new cocktail list is the result of months of research and close collaboration within the restaurant.

Founder and GM Omar Shihab sat down with Caterer Middle East to chat about the new cocktail offering. He said: “Our new bar offering features ingredients that are local and new, perhaps never been explored in the bar. Some of the ingredients are made out of waste from the kitchen.”

Introducing new ingredients can always be challenging Shihab explained, but due to his culinary team’s extensive experience with sustainable ingredients, he knew that adapting the ingredients into a drink format was doable. He said: “We understand these ingredients’ taste profiles and we know how they react to specific preservation methods. Giedre Bielskyte, our bar manager, was mapping out the taste profiles of each drink and seeing what we need to match the botanics of the cocktail’s main liquor.

“We were able to look at new items that are considered waste in the kitchen. Things like tomato water and fruit skins. We found ways to maximise those ingredients. For example, we use the skins as dehydrated garnish. We also thought it was very important to tap into what the kitchen usually buys. That was our inspiration for the pimientos del padron cocktail, which is our take on a paloma, made with BOCA’s favourite tapas.”

Oher cocktails on the list include the cold brew martini made with the UAE’s own Boon coffee. The foraged martini is made with UAE-native desert plant khansour, dried apricots and apricot leather made from apricot skin. The summer in Bethlehem cocktail is made with Palestinian brandy. Others include a frankincense negroni made with white Omani frankincense, and tomato and rayhan, made using tomato pulp that’s left over from paellaand native basil.

“We spent a lot of time with the kitchen team when developing this menu. They helped us explore new ingredients and provided us with a new source that may have been destined to the bin,” added Bielskyte.

The growing popularity of non-alcoholic beverages


BOCA’s new cocktails are also available with a low-ABV or no alcohol option using Lyre’s Non-Alcoholic products. Shihab said: “We are going through an evolution in the market. We are seeing a lot of new bars and menus including the no ABV option. The idea is how to integrate that in an organic way, without having to create a brand new category and what we are doing with this menu. We are using Lyre’s products in replacement for alcoholic products. So essentially we keep the cocktail the same but use zero-proof spirits instead. It is important not to alienate the non-drinkers.”

Over the last year, Shihab has seen see the market adapting a lot more to zero-proof beverages. He added: “The products are getting a lot more visibility, so the consumer is more open to drinking non-alcoholic beverages. We are so happy to get behind that as well.”

The designer hotel collection will become the world’s first to commit to an ongoing vegetarian-led offering

Independent and dynamic designer hotel collection, Ovolo Hotels announces its latest move in an ongoing pledge to ethical eating, conscious cuisine, and cutting-edge veg, becoming the first hotel brand globally to commit to a vegetarian-led offering, Plant’d across its hotel restaurants, globally.

 

The announcement signifies a further progressive shift for the designer hotel collection ongoing, following the success of its ‘Year of the Veg’ campaign which launched in October 2020, where venues transitioned to a vegetarian only offering for an initial 365 days, serving up vibrant vegetarian and plant-based cuisine. 


“Meat is being removed for a second year in a row at Ovolo Hotels. With a number of our Ovolo venues already serving plant-based cuisine, we have decided to go the full 100%. It’s been a strategic move, but Ovolo prides itself on being an industry leader. Ovolo’s Group Creative Culinary Partner, Ian Curley has worked  with the hotel’s restaurants to take the Plant’d veg pledge, including ZA ZA TA at Ovolo The Valley in Brisbane; Monster Kitchen & Bar at Ovolo Nishi in Canberra; Lona Misa at Ovolo South Yarra in Melbourne and Veda at Ovolo Central in Hong Kong; as well as Australia and New Zealand’s first vegan hotel restaurant, Alibi Bar & Kitchen at Ovolo Woolloomooloo (recently awarded Best Hotel Bar at the 2022 Australian Hotels Association Awards). All venues will launch with new menus from launch day.


Inspired by an increasing consumer interest in the many benefits of a plant-based diet, this change reflects Ovolo’s commitment to delivering on its customers' desires, while promoting an ‘eating good to feel good’ mentality. Further demonstrating the hotel’s trailblazing efforts, the new vegetarian offering will extend to in-room dining menus, which have been carefully curated by Ian Curley to ensure an approachable veg-led offering across the group.


Ovolo’s newly appointed Creative Beverage Director, Andrea Gualdi (ex-Maybe Sammy), will lead the drinks offering. The menu will feature seasonal cocktails and wines sourced from some of Australia’s most progressive producers, alongside a strong non-alcoholic offering as part of its new health-conscious direction. 


Of spearheading the new drinks offering, Andrea Gualdi says, “Coming up with healthier, vegetarian-led beverage options has been a creative challenge that our team has really enjoyed. We have access to some incredibly progressive Australian producers, both in the alcoholic and non-alcoholic categories, and we’re proud to represent more of those producers across our new menus, with a strong focus on seasonality and local producers”. 


The Ovolo team have created a ‘Veg Pledge Playbook’ which includes information on the reasons Ovolo has made the switch with their food and beverage offering; what to know before you go veg; tips on defining food and beverage menus; and learnings along the way. Committed to continuously finding ways to further reduce their environmental footprint, this launch comes off the back of several eco-friendly initiatives already implemented by the hotel collection in the past year. These include switching to free-range eggs, opting for a more natural-led wine list, providing refillable water containers, using more planet-friendly paper on the menus and takeaway containers working with suppliers, and Ovolo being an early adopter of removing plastic straws to eliminate plastic.


This also includes the bold move away from single-use bathroom amenity plastics, all OMG Amenities being designed in a sustainable manner, and making use of re-fillable, tamper-free pump bottles which are HDPE recyclable. In addition to this, introducing reusable woven bags for slippers, and the use of biodegradable materials in laundry bags and packaging.

Citrus beers are surely considered as summertime specials, but curated especially to beat the heat, Drifters brings to you two new Mango brew launches along with a hybrid of lager and ale beers to match the flavour of the season.

Mango Mosaic Pale ale, infused with alphonso mango, this pale ale style beer is medium-bodied beer with fruity aromas of guava, mango, passion fruit, and subtle sweetness of mango. It is ideal for sunny days with 16 IBU (Non-bitter), 5.0% ABV. The energizing and flavourful Mango Wit is a full-bodied, creamy Wit brewed with a generous amount of ripe Alphonso mangoes. The addition of fresh fruit adds a tropical flavor and a revitalizing aroma to the brew. It is perfect and an all-around summertime winner with 4.7% ABV. Another new launch to surely tickle your tastebuds is Kolsch (German-style), crisp, delicate and very easy to drink, the German-style Kolsch is a hybrid beer of lager beers and ale beers. It is light in color and has a malt character. This style’s fermentation process yields a light, vinous character which is accompanied by a slightly dry, crisp finish. ABV 4.8%, IBU 17 (not bitter).
