Air India and Riyadh Air Sign Agreement to Expand Premium Travel Options Between India, Saudi Arabia, and Beyond

Memorandum of Understanding outlines collaboration plans for codeshare and interline agreements, and collaboration on multiple other areas

  • Partnership supports business, tourism, and family connections, reflecting the deep ties between the two nations

Air India, India’s leading global airline, and Riyadh Air, Saudi Arabia’s new national carrier, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the foundation for a partnership that will offer guests seamless connections between India, Saudi Arabia, and destinations beyond.

The MoU reflects the shared ambition of both full-service premium carriers to boost global connectivity for travellers flying between India, Saudi Arabia, and beyond, leveraging the geographical advantages of their hubs at Delhi, Mumbai, and Riyadh.

Subject to regulatory approvals, Air India and Riyadh Air intend to introduce interline and codeshare arrangements that will enable guests to travel seamlessly across each other’s networks with the convenience of a single booking and smoother onward connections via their respective hubs .

The two airlines will also explore collaboration across a range of areas, including reciprocal loyalty programme benefits, cargo services, operational support  and digital and technology initiatives designed to enhance the guest experience. The partnership supports growing demand for travel linked to business, tourism, and family visits, reflecting the deep economic, cultural, and people-to-people ties between Saudi Arabia and India.

Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Air India, said: “India and Saudi Arabia are two important growth markets in global aviation today, and the scale and momentum in both countries make this a natural partnership. We look forward to working with Riyadh Air to bring together complementary strengths of the two airlines to unlock that opportunity with a focus on offering our guests more choice across our combined networks and elevating their travel experiences.”

Tony Douglas, CEO of Riyadh Air, stated, “India is one of the most important and dynamic aviation markets in the world, and this partnership with Air India marks a defining step in Riyadh Air's mission to connect Saudi Arabia with key global destinations. Together, we will offer guests a seamless, world-class experience that reflects the deep cultural and economic bonds shared between our two nations.”

Since its privatisation in 2022, Air India has significantly expanded its global alliance network. Today, the airline maintains 25 codeshare partnerships and nearly 120+ interline agreements with leading carriers worldwide, providing seamless access for Air India customers to over 1,000 destinations globally.

Riyadh Air has recently launched public sales on its website and app for flights to London Heathrow, with inaugural flights set to take off on July 1. This new route offers Indian guests, via seamless connections through Riyadh, a direct gateway to the United Kingdom and Europe, further expanding the possibilities for business, leisure, and family travel.

Air India earns Skytrax 4-star rating as passenger experience transformation gains momentum

Air India, India’s leading global airline, today announced it has been awarded the Skytrax 4-Star Airline Rating for Business Class and Economy Class, reaching another milestone in its ongoing transformation under the Vihaan.AI programme.

Air India’s elevation from 3-star to 4-Star status follows a comprehensive transformation spanning fleet modernisation, product upgrades, digital innovation, on-ground experience, and service culture enhancements, among several other aspects combining to deliver a significantly improved passenger experience across touchpoints.

The transformational changes have also translated into a consistently improving customer feedback and sentiment. Air India’s Net Promoter Score (NPS) - a key measure of customer advocacy - has improved by more than 70 points, rising from -35 in late 2022 to nearly +40 today, reflecting tangible gains in areas that matter most to passengers. On Air India’s flagship A350s and B787-9s, the NPS is consistently in the high 60s.

Skytrax is the world’s leading international air transport rating organisation, and its star ratings are widely regarded as a global benchmark for airline quality. The 4-Star Airline Rating recognises airlines delivering strong, consistent performance across product and service throughout the customer journey.

Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Air India, said: “This 4-Star rating from Skytrax is an important recognition of the progress we have made in transforming Air India into a more modern, customer-focused airline. This achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work of over 24,000 Air India employees who have embraced this transformation with commitment and pride. While this milestone reflects how far we have come, it also strengthens our resolve to continue raising the bar, with a clear ambition to achieve a 5-Star rating in due course as we build a world-class global airline with an Indian heart.”

The Skytrax audit evaluates the entire customer journey, covering airport processes, lounge experience, onboard product, food and beverage, and the quality and consistency of service. The 4-Star certification reflects holistic, sustained improvements across all touchpoints, rather than isolated enhancements.

Fleet upgrades: At the core of Air India’s transformation is an ambitious fleet modernisation programme, including the induction of India’s first Airbus A350 as well as brand-new Boeing 787-9s with made-for-Air India interiors, the completed retrofit and return to service of 27 retrofitted A320neo with all-new cabin interiors, and the ongoing retrofit of nearly 40 retrofitted legacy Boeing 787-8 and Boeing 777 now underway. In just four years, Air India’s upgraded fleet has grown to over 120 aircraft, 66% of its full-service fleet, significantly enhancing passenger experience across its network.

On the ground: Air India has reimagined its airport and lounge experience, with new, redesigned lounges in Delhi, Bengaluru, and San Francisco, with more to follow in other parts of the world. Across airports, improvements such as streamlined boarding, self-service check-in, and digital tools have made journeys more seamless.

Reimagined onboard experience: The airline has also comprehensively redesigned its onboard experience. Every cabin crew member has undergone rigorous retraining to the standards of the new Air India, alongside the induction of over 5,000 newly recruited cabin crew. This is complemented by a complete refresh of the soft product, including inflight meals and beverages, bedding, amenities, and more. Air India’s new inflight entertainment system now offers over 3,000 hours of content on all new and upgraded widebody aircraft, while on narrowbody aircraft, more than 1,250 hours of content is available via Vista Stream, its wireless inflight entertainment service. Inflight connectivity is also being progressively introduced, bringing onboard internet connectivity to customers.

Digital infrastructure and customer support: A complete overhaul of the airline’s digital & IT infrastructure and customer support system has also delivered step-change improvements - introducing an all-new website and a mobile app that stands among the highest-rated airline apps globally, a unified platform supported by a generative AI chatbot handling over 14 million interactions, reducing call wait times at the airline’s customer contact centre to around 10 seconds, and enabling faster refunds and issue resolution.

Air India Maharaja Club Members Can Now Earn and Redeem Maharaja Points on Air India Express Flights

GURUGRAM, May 2026: 2026: Air India today announced a significant expansion of its Maharaja Club loyalty programme, enabling members to earn and redeem Maharaja Points on flights operated by Air India Express to over 55 destinations across South, Southeast and West Asia, in addition to Air India services.

This much-awaited enhancement reflects Air India Group’s continued focus on making Maharaja Points more relevant for frequent flyers, enabling members to unlock greater value on their journeys across both Air India and Air India Express’ expansive network.

Maharaja Club members can immediately begin earning Maharaja Points and Tier Points on Air India Express-operated flights when booking across multiple channels, including the Air India and Air India Express websites and mobile apps and through major travel agents.

Maharaja Club members will also have their Air India Express flights contribute to their tier progression, with eligible flights counting toward both minimum flight requirements and Tier Points accumulation, enabling members to accelerate reaching higher tiers of the programme.

Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer, Air India, and Chairman, Air India Express, said: “Our focus is on continually expanding Maharaja Club in a way that ensures our loyal customers’ travel experiences across destinations contribute meaningfully to their relationship with the Air India group. The growing scale of the Air India Express network makes the introduction of accruals and redemptions on these flights both timely and important, addressing a long-standing expectation of our frequent flyers. It also reflects our aim to build Maharaja Points into a valuable currency over time.”

Maharaja Club members can accrue Maharaja Points on all Air India Express flights by entering their Maharaja Club ID at the time of booking. Maharaja Points for Air India Express flights cannot be claimed retrospectively in the current phase of the rollout.

Members can add their Maharaja Club ID during booking on Air India and Air India Express platforms, as well as select online travel partners. The addition or modification of Maharaja Club membership ID is not available at airport counters or contact centres in the current phase.

The Maharaja Points accrual framework applies to a wide range of bookings, including special fares for senior citizens, students, and armed forces personnel. Reward Points will be calculated on base fare and fuel surcharge, with accrual rates aligned to Air India to ensure a consistent and easy-to-understand earning structure.

For bookings made via the Air India Express website and mobile app, Red members will earn 8 Maharaja Points per INR 100 spent, Silver members will earn 10 points, Gold members 11 points, and Platinum members 12 points.

For bookings made through other channels including Traditional and Online Travel Agents (OTAs), Red members will earn 6 Maharaja Points per INR 100 spent, Silver members will earn 8 points, Gold members 9 points, and Platinum members 10 points.

Redemptions of Maharaja Points for Award Flights on Air India Express are currently available to members booking codeshare flights bearing Air India’s ‘AI’ designator code but which are operated by Air India Express, via the Air India website and mobile app.

For instance, a Maharaja Club member wants to fly from Delhi to Guwahati and searches for flight options on the Air India website or mobile app. On the flight selection page, they would find multiple flight options on the sector bearing ‘AI’ flight numbers, but a few of them may be operated by Air India Express under the codeshare agreement between the two carriers. The member can simply redeem their Maharaja Points for those flights in addition to the other flights operated by Air India.

Redemptions for Air India Express Award Flights start from 1,500 Maharaja Points, as illustrated in the following sample redemption pricing table: Bengaluru-Chennai – 1,500 points; Dimapur-Guwahati – 1,500 points; Bengaluru-Kozhikode – 2,000 points; Bengaluru-Goa – 2,500 points; Mumbai-Goa – 2,500 points; Bengaluru-Mumbai – 4,000 points; Ahmedabad-Kolkata – 4,500 points; Delhi-Bengaluru – 7,000 points; Amritsar-Dubai – 12,000 points; Mumbai-Abu Dhabi – 12,000 points; Kochi-Bahrain – 12,000 points; and Bengaluru-Bangkok – 12,000 points.

In the later phases of the integration, Maharaja Club members flying Air India Express will be extended a host of benefits such as priority check-in, priority boarding, Fly Prior, seat selection, and flexibility through cancellation and rescheduling fee waivers on eligible flights and services.

Air India debuts its first signature Maharaja Lounge at San Francisco, expanding global premium offering

Air India, India’s leading global airline, today announced the opening of its newest signature lounge at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), called ‘The Maharaja Lounge’. Officially opening its doors to guests on May 23, the launch of the new lounge marks yet another pivot in the ongoing transformation of the airline’s product and service, extending the "new Air India experience" to one of its key international gateways.

Located near Gate A1 in the International Terminal at SFO, The Maharaja Lounge is spread over 3,300 sq. ft. and features luxurious, contemporary interiors that blend modern design sensibilities with elements rooted in Indian aesthetics. The lounge offers a seating capacity of 80 guests and is available to Air India’s First and Business Class guests, and Platinum and Gold members of the airline’s Maharaja Club loyalty program. It also features a dedicated zone reserved exclusively for Air India’s First Class guests.

Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Air India, said: “The opening of the Maharaja Lounge at San Francisco builds on the recent launch of our flagship lounge at Delhi, marking the beginning of a new generation of signature lounges for Air India. North America has long been a key pillar of Air India’s network, and our continued investments reflect both, this commitment and our ambition to introduce a new standard of travel experiences in the region in time to come.”

“As Air India continues to transform into a world-class global airline, we are focused on delivering a consistent, elevated experience across our network, blending modern luxury with the warmth and timeless appeal of Indian hospitality.”

Conceptualised by the award-winning global hospitality design firm Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA), The Maharaja Lounge is a refined expression of heritage seamlessly woven with luxury, offering guests an immersive introduction to India even before their journey begins. It mirrors the design philosophy of the recently launched flagship Maharaja Lounge in Delhi, positioning this as the second in a series of signature lounges envisioned by Air India.

Design approach

Thoughtfully curated, the space brings together distinctive elements of the brand and Air India’s rich cultural legacy, creating an atmosphere that is warmly familiar yet exquisite. The hues of champagne, ivory, and deep reds mirror the brand’s colour palette. Brand motifs are integrated throughout the interiors, including the ‘Vista’ patterns on the walls and furniture. The lounge has been designed to evoke the essence of quintessential Indian hospitality, creating an atmosphere of warmth, comfort, and understated luxury for guests. To honour the airline's historical connection to the arts, the space features works by local artists that showcase regional heritage. Select installations also incorporate upcycled aircraft components, thoughtfully reimagined into contemporary art pieces.

The spatial elegance of the lounge is defined by the following curated zones, each designed to uplift the interior landscape.

  • The Aviator’s Bar: The bar has a distinctive speakeasy vibe, anchored by a well-curated cellar of wines and whiskies hand-picked for the discerning traveller. The warm, rich hues of the space, coupled with the signature ceiling design, provide a sophisticated backdrop where aviation enthusiasts and global travellers alike can convene in an atmosphere of timeless elegance. Complementing this is a menu of thoughtfully crafted signature cocktails. For instance, the Maharaja Manhattan is a regal twist on the timeless Manhattan honouring the Maharaja of spices – black pepper.

  • Tarmac View: The seating and dining sections of the Private Zone and the Business Class lounge overlook the tarmac offering enchanting views of aircraft taking off and landing. The immersive experience of ‘wine and dine with a view’ is perfect for both plane-spotters and curious travellers.

  • Social Zone: Adjacent to the Aviator’s Bar is the lounge’s primary social zone, a space meticulously designed to foster a sense of community. This vibrant area captures the dynamic spirit of modern travel, offering an environment for guests to engage and connect. Configured to accommodate the natural “hustle” of a premier international hub, the seating arrangements encourage both spontaneous conversation and group interaction, while still offering pockets of privacy and a sense of exclusivity for more intimate moments.

  • Dining Area: The Maharaja Lounge offers a curated and delightful dining experience for all guests, who can choose from a wide variety of Indian and international culinary delicacies including live cooking stations. The area includes a hot buffet island/counter, a cold counter and a beverage station serving a host of delicacies to choose from.

  • Private Zone: Tucked into a serene corner of the lounge, this space is a sanctuary of understated luxury. Designed for heightened privacy and comfort, the Private Zone offers a more intimate setting with elevated service, allowing guests travelling First Class to relax, work, or unwind in a calm and discreet environment before their departure.

This expanded network has strengthened the programme’s scale, engagement, and utility across a broader set of member interactions.

Air India welcomes the release of government’s Hub-and-Spoke SOP; prepares to launch international connectivity from Varanasi

Air India today welcomed the Government of India’s push to operationalise the hub-and-spoke aviation model and announced that it is preparing to launch international connectivity from Varanasi under this model.

Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Air India, said: “This is a transformative step for Indian aviation. We would like to thank the Hon’ble Prime Minister for his vision, to make India a global aviation hub and develop the entire aviation ecosystem. The hub-and-spoke model will not only strengthen connectivity but also ensure optimal use of airport infrastructure developed across the country. We thank the Minister of Civil aviation for championing the entire Hub and Spoke model which will create a strong multiplier effect and act as a catalyst for India’s broader growth.”

Mr. Wilson thanked the Civil Aviation Secretary for playing a key role by engaging closely with all stakeholders such as airlines, airports, government agencies to ensure that operational readiness, passenger convenience and security considerations were addressed holistically as the model moves towards implementation.

As part of its network expansion and in alignment with the hub and spoke model, Air India is preparing to launch international connectivity from Varanasi, strengthening the city’s linkages with global destinations and enhancing access for passengers from surrounding regions.

P. Balaji, Group Head – Governance, Risk, Compliance and Corporate Affairs, Air India, said: “The introduction of international hub-and-spoke connectivity from Varanasi underscores our focus on expanding India’s global aviation footprint beyond metros. It will provide tremendous boost to international travellers from India’s Tier 2 and tier 3 cities by cutting down travel time, while making travel seamless and convenient.”

The hub-and-spoke model marks a fundamental shift in India’s aviation landscape - from a predominantly end destination market to a global transit ecosystem. It will help airlines optimise aircraft utilisation and contribute to decongestion at major airports by decentralising passenger processing, including customs and immigration, across spoke locations.

Air India welcomes its first retrofitted B787-8 featuring new cabin interiors and livery

Air India today unveiled its first retrofitted, twin-aisle B787-8 (registered VT-ANT), marking the successful completion of a nose-to-tail cabin refresh of the first of 26 B787 aircraft.

The aircraft, which received comprehensive interior upgrades at Boeing’s Modification Center in Victorville, California, was subsequently painted in Air India’s striking new livery at AeroPro, an FAA Part-145 certified aircraft paint facility in San Bernardino, California.

Refreshed cabins, upgraded experience

As part of the retrofit, the aircraft interiors were completely reconfigured, transforming it from a two-class layout previously to a modern three-class configuration now with the installation of brand-new seats and inflight entertainment (IFE) system, and bringing the aircraft in line with Air India’s latest widebody product standards, as seen on its new bespoke Boeing 787-9 inducted in January 2026.

The first B787 took close to 12,825 manhours over 45 days for the retrofit, as teams progressed through a tightly choreographed workflow - from stripping out the legacy interiors to reconfiguring the cabins, installing new seats, carpets, wall laminates, overhauling galleys, lavatories, and rigorously testing the new seating and cabin components.

Refurbishing the first aircraft required a total of:

  • 475 metres of fabric for new seats across cabins

  • 167 metres of synthetic leather

  • 169 metres of carpet

  • 646 litres of paint

The aircraft exterior received a complete makeover as well, with a 20‑member specialist team dedicating over 5,700 hours over 18 days to strip the old livery and meticulously apply the new Air India colours.

These custom-styled cabins now feature:

  • 20 luxurious private suites in Business Class in a 1-2-1 layout, each offering privacy sliding doors, direct aisle access, 42-inch of pitch, fully flat 79‑inch bed, 17‑inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreen, multiple charging options, a softly lit cubby, vanity mirror, headphone hook, and a jaali‑inspired feature lamp.

  • 25 Premium Economy seats in a 2-3-2 layout, each offering enhanced privacy, 38‑inch pitch, 7‑inch recline, 6‑way headrest, calf and leg rest, 13.3‑inch 4K QLED HDR screens, Type A and C fast charging ports, and a bottle holder for added convenience.

  • 205 Economy Class seats in a 3-3-3 layout, each ergonomically optimised, offering 31/32‑inch pitch, 5‑inch recline, 11.6‑inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreen, and Type A and C charging ports.

Additional enhancements across cabins encompass new carpets and curtains, new wall laminates, galley overhauls, refresh of all lavatories, replacement or refurbishment of overhead bin panels, installation of a new Cabin Service System, and an updated Crew Application Panel interface.

The cabins feature customised versions of the Elevate Ascent seat in Business Class and RECARO PL3530 and CL3710 seats in Premium Economy and Economy Class, respectively. All seats are equipped with Thales’ state-of-the-art AVANT Up inflight entertainment (IFE) system.

Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Air India, said: “This is a yet another proud milestone in our transformation journey as we welcome this transformed legacy B787 aircraft as a shining beacon of the new Air India. The retrofit of our first widebody aircraft is a visible symbol of the momentum behind Air India’s transformation. With 25 other 787s undergoing this comprehensive refresh, we are rapidly modernising the backbone of our long‑haul fleet and raising the bar for customers flying between India and the world."

Progress of retrofit programme

Air India will be retrofitting 25 additional B787 aircraft over the next year, two of which are already undergoing the process, as part of a US$400 million investment to modernise the airline’s legacy fleet. The B787 retrofit programme has been jointly conceptualised and executed with Boeing, ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety in the aircraft and throughout the process.

Upon full completion of the B787 retrofit program by 2027, Air India aims to significantly upgrade the onboard product and passenger experience on over 300 flights per week to destinations across the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia. Air India will subsequently retrofit 13 of its legacy B777-300ER aircraft.

This initiative forms a key part of Air India’s broader fleet modernisation efforts, delivering elevated comfort, privacy, and entertainment options while reinforcing the airline’s position as a premium global carrier.
