NOVEMBER, 2022 Leading digital travel platform Booking.com today announced an array of new product features in celebration of the one-year anniversary of its Travel Sustainable program, introduced in 2021 to provide travelers with transparent and credible information to make more mindful choices for their trips. With the ongoing aim to recognize the efforts of a wide range of property types to operate more sustainably and to provide travelers with consistent and easy-to-understand information, the company is introducing three distinct badge levels to the Travel Sustainable program.

 

Aligned to the principle that reputable, third-party certification remains the gold standard in the industry, the new levels to the Travel Sustainable program provide even better visibility and recognition for currently uncertified properties that are taking steps to operate more responsibly with regards to their impact on the environment and their local community. The levels help illustrate a clearer pathway for accommodations to work towards eventual certification, especially for those that might be at an earlier stage in their sustainability journey. The aim is to also help encourage and incentivize more accommodations to continue making progress towards that goal.

 

For travellers, the new badge levels being introduced to Booking.com’s Travel Sustainable program have been designed to more clearly demonstrate a broader spectrum of where different accommodations are at on their individual sustainability journeys, as well as the specific measures they are implementing. The aim of the enhanced structure is to also more clearly highlight those accommodations that have made outstanding commitments and investments on this front to achieve one of more than 40 recognized ecolabels and certifications.

 

The new badge levels for Travel Sustainable are as follows:

  • Level 1: This new entry-level designation for the Travel Sustainable badge indicates that a property has implemented some impactful sustainability practices. This Level 1 badge will soon show up with one leaf and includes a full display of all practices that have been implemented.

  • Level 2: Accommodations receiving the Level 2 version of the Travel Sustainable badge have made considerable investments and efforts to implement impactful sustainability practices. The Level 2 badge will soon show up with two leaves and includes a full display of all practices that have been implemented.

  • Level 3: The Level 3 Travel Sustainable badge is reserved for those accommodations that have made large investments and efforts to implement impactful sustainability practices but have not yet achieved an official third-party certification yet. The Level 3 badge will soon show up with three leaves and includes a full display of all practices that have been implemented.

 

Certified properties: Accommodations that have made huge commitments towards sustainability, including the additional effort and investment to achieve one of 40+ credible third-party certifications, receive the highest level of recognition as part of the Travel Sustainable program. These accommodations are recognized with a certified badge, including the name of their certification.

 

With the introduction of these new levels, 400,000+ accommodations on Booking.com are now being recognized for their efforts to operate more sustainably. India is among the top 10 countries with the highest number of accommodations receiving a Travel Sustainable badge on Booking.com.  The countries leading the way are Italy (46,365) followed by France (27,677), Germany (24,038), Spain (23,650), United States (19,396), Brazil (19,160), India (15,743), United Kingdom (15,366), Greece (12,442) and Poland (10,745).

 

New filters for hybrid and fully electric rental cars

A new search filter for fully electric and hybrid rental cars is now live across the Booking.com app and website, making it easier for travelers to find more sustainable ground transport options for their next road trip, with hybrid vehicles and fully electric options available in 60 countries.

 

Carbon emissions information for accommodations and flights

As part of Booking.com’s new partnership with climate tech company CHOOOSE, carbon emissions data for accommodation bookings in Europe will be displayed for the first time on the platform in an effort to both understand where and how to present this information so it is useful for customers in their decision-making process. The new features will first go live for accommodation options in Europe, with the intent to expand globally. Similarly, together with CHOOSE and in line with the aviation framework developed together with the Travalyst Coalition, Booking.com will also start providing information about the carbon emissions associated with flight options on the platform. The option to sort flight searches based on this carbon emissions data will be introduced in 2023.

Wedding season sees demand for banquet halls jump by 68% and that for jewellers by 43%: Justdial Consumer Insights

 

-India sees a 30% jump in demand for wedding services

Mumbai, Nov 15: After two years of low-key celebrations due to COVID restrictions, this year’s wedding season sees a rise in demand (YOY) for a wide range of wedding services with searches for banquet halls being up by 83%, caterers by 57%, and wedding jewellers by 44%, reports the latest Justdial Consumer Insights report.

 

Overall demand on Justdial for wedding services, comprising of banquet halls, caterers, decorators, DJs, event organisers, wedding jewellers, tailors, Mehendi artists, pandits, photographers, matrimonial bureaus, and wedding bands, saw a 30% jump across India’s 1000 towns and cities. This demand was primarily accentuated by Tier-II cities that saw a 48% rise in demand, and in Tier-I cities, it was 22%. 

 

Commenting on the consumer trends during this wedding season, Mr. Prasun Kumar, CMO, Justdial said: “We are witnessing a surge in demand during this wedding season as India reportedly will see 32 lakh weddings in a period of next 30 days. The last two years have been difficult for wedding services due to restrictions on marriages due to COVID. Weddings have been a big driver for India’s gig economy, and it is encouraging to witness that demand is rising fast in Tier-II cities. Demand for wedding services in Tier-II cities is now 2X vis-à-vis Tier-I and it augurs well for the economy at large. It also reflects the fact that businesses of all hues even in Tier-II towns and cities are now getting online to maximise their reach and enhance their business.”

 

Amongst wedding services, jewellers, banquet halls, decorators, photographers, and caterers, were the top-5 services that saw maximum demand and contributed to almost 60% of the searches related to wedding services on the platform.  

 

For wedding jewellers, Mumbai topped the demand across the country followed by Delhi and Hyderabad. Searches in Tier-I cities rose by 29%, while Tier-II cities witnessed a jump of 44%. Among Tier-II cities, Jaipur led the demand race followed by Surat, Rajkot, Chandigarh, and Coimbatore.

 

Demand (YOY) rise for banquet halls was the highest across all wedding services as it saw a 68% rise in searches in India. Among Tier-II cities this demand rose by 83%, and in Tier-I cities by 46%. Mumbai topped the searches for banquet halls and contributed to almost 27% of the demand in Tier-I cities followed by Delhi and Chennai in the second and third place respectively. Coimbatore, Surat, Nagpur, Lucknow, and Patna were the top-5 Tier-II cities that saw maximum demand for banquet halls.

 

Searches for decorators jumped by 31% with Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru driving maximum demand among Tier-I cities. The demand in Tier-II cities was up by 43% with cities like Chandigarh, Indore, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Surat driving maximum traction.

 

Demand for wedding photographers rose by 23% in the country with searches in Tier-II cities being 2.3X of that in Tier-I cities. Mumbai and Delhi contributed to almost 50% of the demand generated by Tier-I cities. Chandigarh, Lucknow, Patna, Rajkot, and Coimbatore were the top-5 Tier-II cities with maximum demand for wedding photographers.   

 

Searches for caterers went up by 31% with Tier-II cities outstripping Tier-I cities in terms of demand. Tier-II cities saw the demand going up by 31% and Tier-I cities by 57%. Bengaluru, topping the list, had the highest demand for caterers followed by Mumbai and Delhi among Tier-I cities. Among Tier-II cities Jaipur, Lucknow, Coimbatore, Chandigarh, and Ernakulam were the top-5 with maximum demand for caterers.

Pune November 2022: Lexicon Institute of Hotel Management organised a Fruit Mixing Event, also known as the Cake Mixing Event. The institute celebrated the occasion with all the members of the Lexicon IHM family.

Traditionally, the purpose of the occasion was to celebrate the onset of the festive season with everyone. Fruits, nuts and spices which were used to make festive goodies were mixed with local alcohol for preservation and flavor. WELCOMING HORIZONS – THE ORIENTATION PROGRAM @BCIHMCT

Banarsidas Chandiwala Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (BCIHMCT), New Delhi organized the Orientation Programme for the First Year students, (Batch 2022 -2026).

The institute welcomed the radiant and energetic bunch of students with host of activities including – Introductory Session, Name Game Activity, Communication Skills Enhancement session by Peeyush Srivastav (HOD, F&B, BCIHMCT), Session by the Training and Placement DepartmentBY Dr. Manish Malhotra, Mr. Sidharth srivastav and Mr. Nikhil Sharma, Assistant Professors, BCIHMCT, Speeches by Prof. R K Bhandari, Principal, BCIHMCT, Mr. Ranojit Kundu (HOD, Patissiere) among many other activities.

The main purpose of the Orientation Programme was to make students aware about the college, the educational facilities available to them and to learn about the faculty members.

Each day, the orientation programme commenced with a warm welcome to all the students of the First years and gave ample opportunities to students to showcase their skills and talents in a variety of ways. It is a first step for a college student to prepare himself/herself to embark on their future journey.

In one of the sessions of art and craft activity, the students were asked to make handicrafts and paintings with a theme in their mind in which we discovered many talented artists among the first year students.

In another session on communication skills, Mr Peeyush Srivastav, faculty, gave important inputs on enhancing and improving vocabulary through developing a reading habit, to read newspapers, use dictionary, play word games and its usage in conversation. He explained that the primary focus of the students should be to be observant, inquisitive and to have a recall value. The communication skills require teamwork which is a combination of 3C's - Collaboration, Cooperation and Coordination. It helps us to create a vision which inspires us to imagine and become innovative. It is one of our important life skills which would be helpful in our coming future and our life is totally meaningless without it.


The Session on Career opportunities by Mr. Ranojit Kundu was invigorating and exhaustive with a light sense of humour. He motivated the students to remain focused on the opportunities which the hospitality sector brings along. Only the students with dedication, sincerity and discipline will be able to harness the true potential of this professional course, he explained. The session on Computer Department was taken by Mr. Mohan Jain, Assistant Professor wherein explained the various facilities provided by the institute and the session on Library was taken by our experienced and dedicated Librarian, Mr Mohinder Pal Singh. He explained the importance of books in the modern times and how this facility can be utilized by the students during the entire year.

Students also watched a movie “The Hundred-Foot Journey”, which was about a chef and his family proving his passion towards Indian cuisine and his battle with the orthodox French cuisine, in terms of culture, ingredients and taste. This movie portrayed the chefs’ love and passion for cooking. The programme came to an end with a question- answer session in which the students shared their doubts and queries.

Ms. Smriti Saneja, alumni , BCIHMCT and now an Image Consultant, took a session on Professional Grooming. Students understood the importance of grooming in their profession. She addressed all doubts and provided them with guidance on classes, grooming and communication skills. The activity ended with a group photograph followed by a huge round of applause. The day ended with students walking away carrying many value points and lessons of life which would benefit them in their professional journey.

Class Coordinators Ms Divya Thakur and Mr. Durga Prasad Shukla, Assistant Professors, handled the entire Orientation program effectively and got a positive response from all the students.

 

THE CURTAIN RAISES FOR KERALA LITERATURE FESTIVAL 2023 

One of Asia’s largest literature festivals, the Kerala Literature Festival (KLF) is now open for delegate registration. The 4-day festival will be held at Kozhikode beach from 12th to 15th January 2023. The festival is promoted by DC Kizhakemuri Foundation and supported by the Government of Kerala. Renowned Poet & Critic, K. Sachidanandan is the Festival Director.

KLF is part of the tourist calendar of the region with participation from across India and from other parts of the world.  KLF is expected to have the world’s best writers and speakers over the 4-day span of the event.  Kozhikode, where Vasco da Gama landed in 1498 was known as the spice capital of the world since ancient times. During the valedictory function of the 21st Chandiwala Hospitality Ensemble, which was held at the Banarsidas Chandiwala Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology, New Delhi (Oct 19-Oct 21, 2022), it was an honor for BCIHMCT to announce SHRI RAJINDERA KUMAR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP for the budding hoteliers.

This scholarship aims to provide financial support to one of the deserving meritorious and underprivileged students every year. This Memorial Scholarship Fund will offer renewable, four-year scholarships to students with financial needs who display academic achievement.

Ms Prisha Walecha, (Batch 2021 – 2025) became the first recipient of Shri Rajindera Kumar Memorial Scholarship. This award was given by Mrs Komal Kumar (wife of Late Shri Rajindera Kumar) and Mr Shivendera Kumar (son of Late Shri Rajindera Kumar) Director, The Ambassador, New Delhi. This award was announced by Mrs Komal Kumar (wife of Late Shri Rajindera Kumar) and Mr Shivendera Kumar (son of Late Shri Rajindera Kumar) Director, The Ambassador, New Delhi.

Mr Kumar was a Guide and Mentor to the entire hospitality industry and we used to get tremendous support from him always. We don’t see many philanthropic acts in our industry nowadays, whereas during this pandemic the need for such noble initiative has arisen more. Mumbai, October 2022: The Covid lockdown (2020 & beyond..)brought out the hidden chef in a lot of people. While most of us decided to limit our experiments to personal kitchens, one SoBo entrepreneur, owner of Gateway Brewing co., decided to take things further and Pizza Dude came to life in August 2022. Pizza Dude is a delivery kitchen that will transport Mumbaikars to the city of Rome, offering Roman-style pizzas that one can buy “by the slice & create a mix box '' to sample 12 different types that are on offer. Since each variant is a slice measuring 5 inches by 4 inches, a person can easily try 3 variants in one go versus buying a whole regular round pie. Additionally, just like Pizza Romana Dude’s dough is not only slow-fermented but also naturally fermented sourdough! Only flour, water & salt are used.

While most of us are familiar with round pizzas, Pizza Dude offers square pizzas, sold by the slice that are cut from a rectangular piece and baked on a sheet pan. During the lockdown, Navin started experimenting with pizza & other sourdough breads to re-create what he had experienced in Rome in 2019.  After days and months of trials and testing, the madness gave birth to Pizza Dude.  “In 2019, I was in Rome where I was introduced to pizza Romana, which is made from dough that is slowly fermented over 24 hours. Cut to 2020, there was a lockdown and I had plenty of time to experiment with this style of pizza, and now I’m happy to share it with the people of Mumbai.” says Navin. 

Using naturally fermented, pillowy, yet strong sourdough base to hold generous amounts of toppings, the pizza is best enjoyed one slice at a time. This also encourages customers to indulge in several flavours at a time. The menu is designed keeping in mind those with classic and adventurous palettes, with innovation, local and variety being the main drivers of the product.

On the menu, one can try classic flavours such as Cherry Tomato, Basil & Fresh Mozzarella, tomato sauce, dude mozzarella blend topped with roasted cherry tomatoes & fresh buffalo mozzarella, finished with basil, extra virgin olive oil and herbs; Creamed Spinach & Corn, white sauce, dude mozzarella blend topped with creamed spinach & sweet corn kernels and finished with crispy garlic flakes; and Truffled Mushroom, garlic white sauce, dude mozzarella blend topped with pan-roasted mushrooms, finished with caramelized onions, truffle oil and greens. Those who like to explore can try novel toppings such as Eggs Kejriwal, garlic white sauce, dude mozzarella blend topped with scrambled eggs. This finished with spicy coriander chili pesto and chives; Hot Chicken & Ranch, tomato sauce, dude mozzarella blend topped with shredded chicken in ghost pepper hot sauce, finished with onion jam & ranch drizzle; Turkish Chicken Doner, dude mozzarella blend topped with spiced chicken, finished with peppers and garlic yoghurt mayo; and Lamb & Za’atar, dude mozzarella blend topped with za’atar spiced mince lamb, finished with fresh salad and labneh. As the show progresses, it journeys into the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, on an adventurous tour with a forest ranger before taking the audience to experience life in a tribal village. Driving towards the region of Karaikudi, which gets its nomenclature from palatial villas, the host stops over to give you a glimpse into the antiques at the Muneeswaran Kovil street. The season concludes on an audacious note with viewers joining in a high-octane journey into Rameshwaram, situated in the Gulf of Mannar at the tip of the Indian Peninsula. Surrounded by turquoise blue water, the adventure culminates in the coastal waters with a session of snorkeling and kitesurfing.
