The situation this time is dramatically different: Ajay Bakaya

Covid faclity.jpg

The MD of Sarovar Hotels and Resorts speaks about turning one of his properties into a Covid care unit for the elderly and business beyond the pandemic wave.

With 95 hotels and 7000 plus keys, Sarovar Hotels and Resorts is a substantial part of India’s hospitality landscape. ETHospitalityWorld caught up with Ajay Bakaya, the managing director of the company and doyen of the industry for a chat on what the industry was going through at the moment.

“The situation this time is dramatically different. When we talked last time, it was about the larger lockdown and the first major downturn of business—but peoples' spirits were not battered, they were still not scared. Unless you had comorbidities or working from, you were going about doing your business and we were seeing the impact in hotels—we saw many more people drive into our resorts, we saw people on flights come in, we saw corporate business pick up,” Bakaya said about the first wave of the pandemic in 2020 adding that during the first wave, there was also a market for those who had Covid but were asymptomatic who used the hotels to quarantine.

The difference this time around was whole families were getting infected and preferring to quarantine at home—those who were looking for care, weren’t considering hotels, but hospitals. There was also the fact that people were just not traveling.

“20 percent of my hotels are shut down at the moment. The other 80 percent are doing an occupancy rate of 20 percent if you put it all together. So it's poor business and in very few hotels are we able to do operational break-even,” he said when asked about Sarovar. Bakaya however did give us some positive examples of what his company was doing.

RevPAR in top six Indian cities decreased by 48% YoY in Q1 2021: JLL

bengluru.jpg

Bengaluru saw the sharpest decline of 60.6% in RevPAR compared to the same period of the previous year

India’s hospitality industry witnessed a decline of 38.7 percent in Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR) during Q1 2021 as compared to Q1 2020, according to JLL’s Hotel Momentum India (HMI) Q1 2021, a quarterly hospitality sector monitor. Additionally, RevPAR in the top six cities has decreased by 48percent in Q1 2021 as compared to Q1 2020.

The recovery of the sector has been primarily driven by the leisure segment performing notably well. A total number of signings in Q1 2021 stood at 28 hotels comprising of 2,064 keys, recording a decline of 53 percent compared to the same period last year. International operators dominated signings over domestic operators with a ratio of 54:46 in terms of inventory volume.

Goa grew to be the RevPAR leader in absolute terms, despite the single-digit decline of RevPAR by 1.1 percent in Q1 2021 compared to Q1 2020. This was due to a 6.4 percent increase in occupancy levels. Demand for domestic leisure travel amidst international travel restrictions continues to make Goa the fastest recovering market in absolute term.

Source

Bengaluru saw the sharpest decline in RevPAR in Q1 2021, with a 60.6 percent decline compared to the same period of the previous year. Demand and supply of operational inventory in six major cities declined by 6.7 Percent and 4.2 percent respectively in the first quarter of 2021.

“In Q1 2021, the hospitality industry witnessed a revival, with most leisure markets performing exceptionally well. The pace of recovery started picking up due to an increase in corporate travel but it was short-lived as the onset of the second wave brought back travel restrictions and derailed the recovery. We expect that the hospitality sector in India will mostly remain under stress in 2021. However, the hotels are much more nimble and better prepared in terms of their SOPs and cost structures to navigate business interruptions this year. A few trades may emerge in the hotel investment space given the dynamic cash flow situations,” said Jaideep Dang, Managing Director, Hotels and Hospitality Group, South Asia, JLL.

We are following covid appropriate behavior like wearing double masks, gloves and also 90 percent of our meals are delivered by inhouse runners to avoid exposure from outsourced teams. We are delivering food at the doorstep with no contact and we only take contactless payments,” Gupta said, explaining the precautionary measures being taken.

The menu changes daily and is repeated on a weekly basis. For example, if Ghia is served one day, Paneer will be served the next day. Apart from providing Covid meals, normal bistro food is also open for deliveries, she said.

INITIATIVE | IIHM join hands with NGOs to set up oxygen support isolation centre in Kolkata

iihm.jpg

The IIHM family, which includes the students at large, have also been deeply affected by Covid-19.

International Institute of Hotel Managemen (IIHM) has stepped in to do its bit towards community welfare. Compassion is the key word in the Hospitality industry and IIHM is practising just that. Witnessing the widespread desolation and suffering that people are experiencing, IIHM has joined hands with several NGOs to set up a 25 bed Oxygen Support Isolation Centre in New Town, Kolkata to provide basic treatment and Oxygen supply to the needy.

The IIHM family, that includes the students at large, have also been deeply affected by Covid. On 15th May, a student from one of the campuses lost his father to the virus. The family is devastated as the father was the only breadwinner of the family. In this situation, the livelihood of the family is at stake, let alone paying the fees for the boy’s education. In this condition, IIHM extended its hand of support and has waived off all the remaining fees of the student so that he can complete his course.

Suborno Bose, Chief Mentor of IIHM said, “Amidst this mass devastation, we cannot just sit and watch people suffering, but have to come forward and help people in need in whatever way we can. In case of our student, too, we cannot bring back the departed soul, but we can surely try to stand by these families and do our part.”

The institute has circulated a message to everyone, to approach them if they hear of any student currently studying in IIHM, who has lost a parent and who was the earning member of the family, so that the institute can support them in whichever way possible.

The hospitality management institution is truly practicing the values of the hospitality trade by coming forward wherever possible to support people in this pandemic. Not just those who have been ailing, but also to those parents who have suffered job losses due to the pandemic and lockdown, IIHM has also promised to consider fee assistance on a case-to-case basis. Students have been asked to mail to their directors at the campuses with their appeal.

NEWS | Mexico’s outbound tourism fell 73% in 2020, according to GlobalData

Mexico’s short-term recovery will depend heavily on its thriving domestic tourism market. Like many other regions, GlobalData projections show domestic trips will recover by 2022.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating effect on Mexican outbound travel, with the number of trips falling by 73%. This figure is the second-highest fall in the Americas, after Peru (76%).

Despite commercial flights operating throughout the year at a limited capacity, many countries were reluctant to open their borders amid Mexico’s high COVID-19 infection and death rate. Ultimately, this has led to a devastating drop in outbound travel which will not recover until 2024, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Craig Bradley, Associate Travel and Tourism Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Many foreign government officials are under pressure to make the right decisions when it comes to travel. Unfortunately, they take the view that countries with high rates of infection and deaths are a risk to the safety of other destinations. Consequently, many international governments have made it almost impossible for Mexicans to enter their borders or at least made it very difficult.”

Mexico’s short-term recovery will depend heavily on its thriving domestic tourism market. Like many other regions, GlobalData projections show domestic trips will recover by 2022.

Bradley continues: “While figures are not guaranteed, the surge in staycation bookings is a global trend. The easing of travel restrictions was slower than expected, and health and safety fears remain a key motivator for domestic tourism.

“Mexico’s domestic tourism market is sizeable. In 2019, there were approximately 275 million domestic trips. Unfortunately, the figure fell by 55% in 2020. As a result, the Mexican Government faces a challenging time. The tourism sector offers jobs and income for many businesses, but the officials may need to consider whether it is safe to promote domestic tourism in the near future as the pandemic continues to hit hard in Mexico.”

INITIATIVE | Masterchef Sanjeev Kapoor partners with Chef José Andres of World Central Kitchen to provide meals to healthcare workers

untitleddesign20210518t221742141_1.jpg

Chef Sanjeev Kapoor along with Chef José Andres are currently dishing out 10,000 meals for frontline healthcare workers in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Gurugram, Kolkata, Goa, and Hyderabad

As the second wave of COVID-19 rages across India, Masterchef and philanthropist Sanjeev Kapoor has come forward with a heart-warming initiative. In a bid to support the healthcare workers, Chef Kapoor along with World Central Kitchen and Taj Hotels is providing free meals to the healthcare staff at various hospitals in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Gurugram, Kolkata, Goa and Hyderabad. World Central Kitchen (wck.org) has been doing pioneering humanitarian work across the world.

As a part of the initiative, Chef Kapoor, World Central Kitchen, and Taj Hotels are currently actively dishing out over 10,000 meals daily for frontline workers on duty across the hospitals in these seven cities. The menu is specially curated keeping in mind their nutritional needs to fight the pandemic. The trio will further ensure all of the safety measures while creating and delivering the meals.

Speaking on the initiative, Sanjeev Kapoor said, “I got a call from World Central Kitchen which was keen to contribute towards Covid relief activities in India. We had provided for to the Covid warriors in hospitals last year. With World Central Kitchen’s intent to support relief work in India, it started all again. While the financial funding would come through World Central Kitchen, we needed a partner to produce large quantity meals in a hygienic way. And, hence, we joined hands with the Taj Hotels. The intent is to give healthcare workers, who are working tirelessly at various hospitals, healthy and hygienic food that is also tasty. We are creating menus looking at the needs of each hospital as a single menu cannot fulfill all requirements. In terms of food options, we are also going with the ones that stay fresh for a long time, as they might not be able to eat it on time.”

At the moment, Sanjeev Kapoor and the team are delivering meals to Cooper Hospital & Sion Hospital in Mumbai, and a state-run civil hospital in Ahmedabad providing thousands of meals a day to the nurses and other staff members. In addition, they have also expanded their offering to other cities like Delhi, Gurugram, Kolkata, Goa and Hyderabad.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the celebrity chef and entrepreneur has been promptly serving the Indian community by arranging, stocking, distributing, and mobilizing food and other essential commodities throughout the period. Some of his initiatives during the lockdown in 2020 included arranging meals for doctors and medical care providers of Kasturba, KEM, and Sion Hospital in association with India’s leading homegrown hospitality brand and catering service.
