Hotels to see 9-11% Revenue Growth in FY25; third straight year in current upcycle: CareEdge Ratings Report

Room rates expected to rise to Rs 7,700 – Rs 7,900 in FY25

CareEdge Ratings estimates that in FY24, hotel industry will end at RevPAR growth of 12-14 per cent on the high base of FY23. The robust resurgence in demand, coupled with the gradual alignment of supply and demand of branded hotels room inventory, has been a noteworthy facet of the hospitality sector's post-pandemic trajectory.

The growth momentum in the hotel industry is expected to be sustained in FY25, resulting in likely y-o-y revenue growth by 9-11% backed by healthy domestic leisure and business travel and complemented by increasing foreign tourist arrivals, contributing to an improved credit profile for industry players. This will make it the third straight year of an upcycle. Pan-India, average room rates (ARRs) are expected to be around Rs 7,200 to Rs 7,400 in the current fiscal, which is likely to rise further to Rs 7,700 to Rs 7,900 in FY25. The hospitality sector's commendable recovery in occupancy rates and average rates has in turn cushioned its RevPAR, estimated to have climbed to an average range of Rs 4,800 to Rs 5,000 by the end of FY24 up from the 4,300-range registered in FY23 and is expected to grow by 9-11% in FY25 on the high base of FY24.

While supply of room inventory is expected to experience a delayed catch-up due to the protracted setup period for greenfield hotels, organized players are strategically expanding their footprint in an asset-light manner. Anticipated supply growth is estimated to range from 4% to 5% compounded annual growth rate over the next 4-5 years, adding over 50,000 rooms to the country's current inventory of approximately 160,000 branded rooms.

Presently, supply is more balanced across different segments, as compared to an earlier mix that was heavily weighted towards luxury and upper upscale hotels. Over the years the supply concentration in the luxury-upper upscale segment has reduced from 39% in FY15 to 32% in FY23 and is expected to reduce further to 26% by FY27 as the majority of new supply is coming in Upscale, Upper midscale and Midscale/Economy sections. This reduction in supply share is despite new rooms being added in all the segments; better balance has arisen due to material supply growth by rooms in upscale, upper midscale and midscale-economy segments. Several global/Indian hotel operators have also launched sub-brands with a clear focus on quality within key destinations which not only helps them in swiftly building a pool of quality inventory with presence across segments but also aids in better allocation of their capital.

“On the back of the surge in domestic demand and underlying GDP growth, the players in the industry are witnessing strong capacity utilization. With the sharp increase in capacity utilization combined with stable supply growth, hotels are seeing significant ability to yield the demand for branded hotels on an ongoing basis which shall support the strong ARR at current levels or drive some growth as well. While the material contribution from international travelers is yet to materialize, currently the domestic demand is the key driver. With the current travel momentum expected to continue and anticipated demand likely to outpace current supply, FY25 is likely to witness steady high occupancies in the range of 68-70% and continued RevPAR growth at 9-11% which shall aid in overall improvement of the credit profile of the players in the industry”, said Ravleen Sethi, Associate Director, CareEdge Ratings.

Mumbai, July , 2022 – New research released by Booking.com, the world’s leading online travel company, shows that Indians are eager to hit the roads and the skies for a leisure trip despite some COVID-19 restrictions.

As the world starts to emerge from strict border closures, Indians are eager to make their travel dreams a reality in the next few months. 86% of Indian travellers stated that they intend to travel in the next 12 months. And despite some COVID-19 restrictions, travel optimism continues to remain high with 70% of Indian travellers accepting of anticipated travel disruptions and 78% considering leisure travel as important while keeping their overall health and safety in mind.

The insights have been drawn from Booking.com’s inaugural APAC Travel Confidence Index, which provides a snapshot of how confident consumers feel about exploring the world again and their motivation to travel. The commissioned research, which polled 11,000 travellers from 11 countries and territories¹ across Asia Pacific, combined with the company’s proprietary data and insights as a digital travel leader for the past 25 years, offers insights into the region’s travel confidence.

India ranks first on the Travel Confidence Index

The Travel Confidence Index explores the overall comfort levels, motivators and concerns of consumers across Asia-Pacific and how this varies across the region. Amongst the 11 APAC markets, India has emerged as the most confident, followed closely by Vietnam and China. While North Asian markets of Korea, Taiwan and Japan ranked lower on the index in terms of overall confidence, travel intent among respondents remained relatively high (above 60%).

Top travel considerations and motivators

The desire to travel remains strong amongst Asia Pacific as well as Indian travellers, with ease of planning and booking travel as well as cost being the top two considerations. Both ranked consistently high across all markets, even as restrictions continue to ease around the region.

While corporate travel is beginning to make a comeback, the shift to remote working and virtual meetings has perhaps brought about a shift in the way we work. Despite many employees having returned to the office across India, only 25% of Indian travellers (Average of 13% in APAC) indicated that work was a reason for them to book a trip. This signifies a slower revitalisation in corporate vs leisure travel.

Top travel deterrents amidst uncertainty

Unsurprisingly, uncertainty due to the constantly evolving COVID-19 situation continues to plague travellers. When asked about their top concerns and what would prevent them from booking a trip, ‘possibility of getting stuck because of frequently changing border regulations’ was listed as the top deterrent by 35% of Indian travellers (APAC 37%). In fact, the research findings put an increased emphasis on flexibility in travel bookings, as 89% of Indian travellers would postpone or cancel a trip if they saw a rise in COVID-19 cases at their travel destination.

State of international travel with borders reopening

The impact of the kind of trips we take, thanks to COVID-19 is likely to continue in the near future as the Booking.com research reveals a preference for domestic travel, despite resumption of international travel. 87% of Indian travellers are likely to travel domestically, even when international travel restrictions are completely lifted.

In addition, Indians continue to remain welcoming to tourists and visitors, with 87% of Indians polled comfortable with India reopening its borders to international travellers. 84% of Indian travellers stated that they are confident about their country’s preparedness to safely receive international travellers.

Sustainable travel remains important & top of mind

Out of the 11 markets polled across the APAC region, India once again topped the index in terms of intent to travel sustainably, with 93% of respondents agreeing on the importance of making sustainable travel decisions followed by Vietnam (83%) and China (77%). The intent also translates into action as 82% of Indian travellers are willing to pay more if it means they can make more sustainable travel choices and 77% of Indian travellers are okay with less variety in options as long as their travel decisions are sustainable.

On the other hand, for travellers from markets such as Australia, New Zealand and Japan, cost and a wide variety of sustainable stay options are core considerations when it comes to making sustainable travel decisions.

Ritu Mehrotra, Commercial Director, APAC at Booking.com said, “It is exciting to see India emerge at the top of Booking.com’s APAC Travel Confidence Index. The findings highlight Indian travellers' love for travel and readiness to explore the world once again. • Delhi emerges as the Dining Capital of India with 32% diners, Bangalore 2nd with 18%

New Delhi, January , 2022: After a period of lull due to Covid, Indians got back to dining out and that emerged as the most preferred activity in 2021 while accepting the new normal with fewer travel plans and frequent hang out rituals. More than 45 million Indians loved eating out at their favourite restaurants. 8,588 tables were booked per hour on the Dineout app with its users from across the country saving ₹1,360 crores via Dineout discounts and offers.

According to the latest Dineout Trends Report 2021 India’s largest dining out and restaurant tech platform, Dineout, ₹ 2,670 was the average bill paid in 2021 as compared to ₹ 1,907 in 2020. The 40% increase in ATV is due to revenge eating phenomena and pent-up dining out demands as it was the only source of entertainment for people in between multiple travel restrictions. Further, Delhi bagged the title of “Dining Capital of India” for the 3rd time in a row accounting for 32% of the total diners in India followed by Bangalore at 18%. Not much to our surprise, Butter Chicken, Dal Makhni & Naan yet again won the league making North Indian food a hit among Indians at 38%, Chinese at 18% and Continental at 16%. The City of Lakes, Udaipur, is the new “City of Love” with 44% of its bookings under "Table for 2" whereas the cities of Agra and Ludhiana had the maximum “Table for 4” reservations.

Interestingly, as much as India is a land of foodies, it boasts a significant number of drink enthusiasts. In the year gone by, it was interesting to observe how revenge dining shot up the average bill by 40% but still diners made considerable savings. This is a testament to Dineout’s value for the diners. We also saw people getting cautious about their choices to dine out at luxury restaurants or places with 4+ reviews and ratings. A total of 73.5% of transactions were made pan India at 4+ rated restaurants. Mumbai stood out from the rest of the cities with a total of 85.2% of transactions done at the best restaurants in the city. Speaking of the overall restaurant revenue, modernizing technologies in restaurants did help us achieve an improved customer satisfaction, thereby boosting restaurant sales.”

Owing to the higher disposable income thanks to our WFH lifestyles, luxury dining across India has increased by as much as 120% & fine dining by 105%, and the average number of diners per booking has also risen.

Highlights from the report:

  • Bangalore loved to chill on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays with over 73% of reservations made over the weekends.

Booking.com Reveals 7 Travel Predictions for 2022

In its most extensive travel predictions research to date, the digital travel leader reveals a renewed sense of optimism amongst Indian travellers, fueling a hunger to embrace the new normal and get back out to fully experience the world in the year ahead

Mumbai, 13th December 2021 - While COVID-19 is not yet in the rearview mirror, an indefatigable sense of hope for travel is beginning to take its place. To explore this rolling wave of travel optimism, Booking.com has commissioned extensive research with more than 24,000 travellers across 31 countries and territories 1 including India, combining it with its proprietary data and insights as a digital travel leader for the past 25 years, to predict how travel will continue to be redefined in 2022.

As per Booking.com’s ‘Travel Predictions 2022 Research’, 2022 will be the year to make the most of unpredictability and start making up for lost vacation time in a big way, with the number of travellers who feel they need to do so having increased by 52% since last year*. Booking.com’s predictions reveal how people will be reigniting the travel spark in the upcoming year. Whether it’s as an essential part of  a self-care regime or the thrill of just saying yes to whatever travel opportunities and experiences come their way, it’s all about seizing the day in 2022 and making every trip matter.

  1. Vitamin Vacay: Travel will become an essential part of self-care

More so than daily exercise or mindful meditation, getting away on vacation will become THE form of self-care in 2022, with over 84% of Indian travellers affirming that travel helps their mental and emotional wellbeing more than other forms of rest and relaxation. After more than a year of ever-evolving travel restrictions, the important benefits that travel has on health and wellbeing are now being acknowledged. Booking.com’s Travel Predictions research reveals that 85% of Indian travellers believe that having a vacation planned has a positive impact on their emotional wellbeing and 69% of Indian travellers say that they didn’t realize how important travel was to their wellbeing until it was no longer an option.

  1. Resetting the Out Of (Home) Office : Vacation time will be strictly work free

When the pandemic hit, homes across the globe became our offices too, and the novelty of working remotely was realized. However, in 2022 we’ll see a significant rise in people wanting to take back control in a bid to firmly re-establish a healthy work-life balance as vacation time itself will be strictly work-free for 77% of Indian travellers in 2022, which wasn’t always the case in 2021 with home and remote work lives blurred. And with 76% of Indian travellers claiming to have worked more hours using less vacation days during the pandemic, we expect to see more people setting their well deserved out of (home) office messages in 2022.

  1. All the First-Time Feels: The anticipation of the journey will be as exciting as the destination

While many of us may have forgotten where our passport is or even just how to pack, all that out-of-practice travel awkwardness will give way to a genuine sense of delight for even the most routine aspects of our trips in 2022. After feeling ‘stuck’ for so long, rather than rushing through the journey, travellers will be relishing every moment. Each ‘first’ of our trips in 2022 will be a moment to savor, with a majority of Indian travellers saying that simple pleasures such as feeling the sun on their skin (75%) or seeing a body of water of some kind instantly improves their mood for the better (84%). Even the uncertainty of navigating public transportation in a new city in a foreign language is something 75% of Indian travellers say they’ll enjoy while 84% of Indian travellers say that travel is more enjoyable when the journey feels like part of the trip itself. After such a long period of limited options, recapturing that first-time feel and leaning in to every single moment will be a hallmark of trips in 2022.

  1. Community First: Authentic connection with the local community will be priority

As restrictions caused travel to slow in many parts of the world, the pandemic forced us to make the most of what was on our doorsteps. From supporting independently owned businesses to spending more time than ever at the neighborhood park, our relationship with the community around us has rekindled. In 2022, this desire to connect authentically with the local community will continue on vacation too, as we seek to be more mindful about every trip we take and ensure our impact on the places we visit and the people who live there is positive. To this effect, 78% of Indian travellers agree it’s important that their trip is beneficial to the local community at their destination and 75% of Indian travellers would appreciate an app or website that provides recommendations on destinations where an increase in tourism would have a positive impact on the local community.

  1. Swipe Right on New Places and Faces: 2022 will finally be the time to branch out and make new connections

For many, the pandemic meant spending an extended and intense period with our closest friends and loved ones, but vacations in 2022 will be an opportunity to branch out and make some new connections. As 81% of Indian travellers want to meet new people while away, we expect to see travellers using their vacations as an opportunity to expand their usual social circles, with 77% of Indian travellers looking forward to socializing while on vacation.  A resurgence of holiday romances is also predicted with 77% hoping for a holiday romance on their next trip.

  1. Just Say Yes: People will be saying YES to travel, making up for the lost travel time

After so long of being told “no” travellers are reclaiming a more positive way of thinking for 2022. The coming year will bring the very best of improv to travel, with us responding to each unexpected twist and turn in the trip with an emphatic “yes, and…”. To that end, nearly 83% of Indian travellers agree they will say yes to any vacation opportunity if budget allows. 79% of Indian travellers are more open to different types of vacation than before the pandemic and 65% of Indian travellers won’t mind where they go on vacation as long as it’s the type of trip they want, they’re just happy to be away from home. Adopting a positive mentality will open up even more of the world to travellers than ever before, with many taking a more adventurous approach to their holiday choices, and maybe even their companions.

  1. Embracing the Unpredictable: People will use technology to embrace travels continued unpredictability

Uncertainty will continue to be a constant in travel in 2022, and while we cannot change or predict every new surprise and challenge that fate has in store for us, we will embrace it. Having leaned on technology in a variety of ways to stay connected and inspired over the past year and a half, our favorite apps will continue to help us navigate the unknown on our trips, with 76% of Indian travellers agreeing that technology helps alleviate the anxiety around traveling. Technology will continue to smooth out the unforeseen bumps in the road with increasing finesse and proactivity.

Ritu Mehrotra, Regional Manager, South Asia at Booking.com said, “As we look towards the year ahead, we’re seeing a lot of anticipation for Indian travellers to return to travel. Whether it’s domestically or abroad or just saying yes to whatever travel opportunity comes their way, it’s our mission to make it easier for everyone to explore again,  when the time is right.  We will be there for travellers - offering the widest choice, great value and the easiest experience from anywhere and on any device - so people can reclaim their travel mojo and enjoy all of the unforgettable experiences this world has to offer, when it's safe to do so again.”

WeddingWire India data predicts that the top three metros- Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore continue to be the hub for weddings!

WeddingWire India, the Indian subsidiary of The Knot Worldwide, a leading online marketplace for couples and wedding professionals, released insightful statistics on how the wedding season is  back in the new normal with a surge of 57% in November 2021 as compared to the previous year. With the increased pace of vaccination and state governments relaxing rules for gatherings, the floodgates for weddings have opened up this season.

The data highlights that Delhi NCR followed by Mumbai, Bangalore, Lucknow, Jaipur has the most demand for wedding planners and wedding venues in the Q4 season. Further highlighting that big-fat weddings are back in demand is the fact that hotels & banquet halls have become the most requested service by the users and there is a drastic decrease in the number of people interested in having a home or virtual weddings. This trend has seen a growth trajectory starting July 2021. Destination weddings are also witnessing a huge uptick with every 10 out of 100 guests enquiring about destination weddings with Jaipur, Udaipur, Mussoorie, and Lonavala being the top choices.

As per the platform, while October had the maximum traffic, November has the maximum number of registered users getting married. Industry estimates by CAIT reveal similar trends that around 2.5 million weddings will take place in November & December. In fact, the first Maha-Saya i.e. 21st November had 8000 weddings in one single day in Delhi itself.

The people who postponed their weddings in Q2 and Q3 are now finally tying knots at the end of this year and in the following year.  Therefore, as per current queries for 2022, the top 3 destinations with the highest demand are Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Data also revealed, with this change in trend and keeping safety as a priority, more and more couples are adopting WedTech platforms for planning their wedding and there is a surge of 27% registered users on the WWI app in November 2021 in comparison to Nov 2020.

Talking about the snowball trend and growth, Anam Zubair, Associate Director of Marketing - WeddingWire India, a part of The Knot Worldwide, said “After almost one and a half years of significant fluctuations owing to the pandemic, there’s a steady growth in the wedding market. Therefore, it’s safe to say that the wedding industry has officially made a comeback. We are certain that this increase in demand will continue to grow and will further lead to the recovery of the industry.”

“The good news is the situation seems to be gradually getting in control and we can witness a good number of demand on saaya dates. It is quite challenging at the moment to find a decent venue anywhere in the country for auspicious dates such as November 21 and November 28. We were pre-booked for November and December, and we already have several queries for January and February as well. Our hotels across Goa, Udaipur, Jaipur, and Lonawala are seeing an uptick in numbers.” added Varun Chhibber, Complex General Manager, The Leela Ambience Gurugram Hotel & Residences, and The Leela Ambience Convention Hotel, a Venue Partner of WeddingWire India.

Breakfast was the most skipped meal amongst urban millennials during COVID-19 Reveals study by Euromonitor International and Quaker

On “Changing lifestyles and dietary habits of Urban Indian consumers post COVID-19”

  • A study was conducted in the age group of 18-50 years, focusing on urban millennials across 4 cities i.e., Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Kolkata. *

  • The study showed 44% of the urban millennials skipped breakfast during COVID-19; men skipped it more than women. *

  • 71% of the respondents were concerned about their weight increase and are leaning towards fad diets.

  • Immunity emerged as one of the top 5 concerns among urban millennials.

  • During the pandemic, nearly 2/3rd of the respondents, including urban millennials increased their wholegrain oats intake, primarily for nutritive value, digestion, and weight management.

  • Study findings launched to mark National Nutrition Month 2021.

New Delhi, September 24, 2021: A special study was jointly done between March 2020 till February 2021 by London-based market research major Euromonitor International and PepsiCo India through its brand Quaker. The study highlighted that 44% of urban millennials, skipped breakfast and delayed meals due to increased household chores and late start to the day.  Further, 64% of urban millennial respondents were driven towards healthy immune system. The study further pointed out that increased consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, including oats, emerged as the key trend during COVID-19.

Titled “Changing lifestyles and dietary habits of Urban Indian consumers post COVID-19”, the study was conducted involving 1,000 respondents in the age group of 18-50 years, focusing on urban millennials in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Kolkata. Launched to mark the National Nutrition Month 2021, the study analysed the changing lifestyle and dietary patterns of people post-COVID-19 to understand consumer behaviour. It tracked a changing pattern, particularly amongst urban millennials, towards dietary habits for a healthy immune system and maintaining weight. The study also mapped if changed behaviours would sustain in the future.

The study outlined that weight watchers must understand the significance of having meals on time and consuming nutrient-rich breakfast. Further, it found that 71% of urban millennials leaned towards the popularity of fad diets, including keto, intermittent fasting, and weekly detox plan, among others to maintain weight.

With understanding the dietary changes in Indian consumers, Vidhi Sharma, Consultant, Euromonitor International said, “While millennials acknowledge the importance of breakfast and believe that it should have wholesome nutrition, they often tend to skip breakfast due to their work schedules or tend to just grab a quick snack in the morning. Popular fad diets are supporting this behavior of skipping breakfast. However, COVID-19 has brought about some positive dietary changes as well among the younger group, with increased intake of fruits, salads, and oats, and improved the willingness to look for healthier alternatives while shopping”.

Dr. Jagmeet Madan, Professor, Principal, Sir Vithaldas Thackersey College of Home Science, SNDTWU, Mumbai, and National President, Indian Dietetic Association, said, “Meal timings are important for better digestion and to maintain weight. Breakfasts within 1-2 hours of waking give energy for the day and should include a variety of food groups. Focusing on high nutrition, exercise, and approach to a sustainable lifestyle will help manage weight and keep the energy levels high.”

Talking about the study findings, Sonam Vij, Associate Director and Category Lead - Quaker Portfolio, PepsiCo India said, “Breakfast helps to start the day right and provide energy for the day. The role of sustainable and nutrition-rich diets becomes even more important as they curb binge eating and help maintain weight. Urban millennials are now increasingly focusing on improving their physical and mental health that constitutes an active lifestyle. We also see that they are shifting to food choices for a healthy immune system as shown by the study. This has heightened the consumer adoption of Quaker Oats, a 100 % Natural Wholegrain which is a good source of Protein, Rich in Fiber, and contains important Micronutrients like Zinc, Iron amongst others. These benefits and more make Oats a convenient, nutritious and delicious option to increase the nutrition quotient in people’s everyday diet especially breakfast, which is one of the most crucial meal of the day.”

Additional key highlights of the study:

  • Nearly 60 % of urban millennials surveyed started doing yoga and walking/running during COVID-19 for physical/mental health activity.

  • The average intake of salads and fruits increased. Further, urban millennials consumed more oats primarily for nutritive value, digestion, and weight management. The urban millennials preferred oats for breakfast as the main dish.

The study also compared lifestyle and dietary changes (in terms of frequency and quantity of food groups as defined by the National Institute of Nutrition); analysed breakfast habits, personal health perceptions and weight management data; and tracked packaged food choices, oats consumption behavior and purchase pattern for groceries before and during COVID-19.

* “All reported findings are based on respondents’ statements and actual changes in behaviors or preferences may differ. Further, the figures shared are only representative of the population surveyed and extrapolating to the entire population is done at the user’s own risk with no warranty or representations from Euromonitor International”

unsplash-image-ALWzVxyAXGE.jpg

The global vaccination drive has had the most positive impact on searches on the travel website in the second quarter of 2021.

News surrounding the expansion of vaccination by Pfizer in May led to a spike in global travel search by a massive 10 percent in 2021—this and other trends were highlighted in the Trend Report for the second quarter of 2021 by Expedia. The company attributes this consumer trend to broadening global vaccine distribution, growing green list countries, and easing of international travel restrictions by countries.

While the traveler’s preference continues to move around domestic and short-haul globally, the report revealed the pace of growth for international travel searches outpacing the growth for domestic travel searches in the second quarter of the year.

The report cited some positive trends in travel searches during the second quarter which Expedia felt would set the trend for travel revival in the coming months. The search volume in 11 of the 13 weeks in the quarter remained positive. This is in sharp contrast to the largely fluctuating trends in the first quarter of the year.

Insights from the Expedia Group Traveler Value Index indicate that 60 percent of consumers would travel within their home country and 27 percent internationally during the next 12 months. While 4 in 10 consumers want more frequent, shorter trips; 28 percent want fewer, longer trips; and more than 30 percent want a combination of shorter and longer trips.

For example, the use of the words “clean” and “hygiene” have both increased by over 60%. In addition to cleanliness, Booking.com has witnessed an increase in travellers booking stays with flexible cancellation policies due to the uncertain environment.

To provide travellers with transparency in health and hygiene at an accommodation, Booking.com introduced the health and safety measures feature on its platform last year that allows accommodation partners to select the different health & safety measures they are taking in areas such as hygiene, sanitization, social distancing and food safety amongst others. Booking.com offers a Flexible-1 Day policy allowing travellers to cancel for free up till one day before check-in as well as one-date change to travellers who book a non-refundable rate.

Commenting on the Indian travel sentiment, Ritu Mehrotra, Regional Manager, South Asia at Booking.com said, “With more and more Indians getting vaccinated and travel restrictions being lifted in phases, we are starting to see pent-up demand for travel. Travel trends that emerged during the pandemic such as closer-to-home destinations, staycations and road-trips still remain popular, but at the same time we are also seeing travel intent gradually resume for international travel. And as a leader in travel, Booking.com will continue to make it easier for people to experience the world in a safe manner - we will be there for our customers offering the widest accommodation choice at great value so travellers can enjoy all of the unforgettable experiences this world has to offer, when the time is right and it is safe to do so. ”

The Maldives has one of the most delicate environments anywhere on the planet. Coral reefs are the foundation of the islands. They offer protection to the tiny islands as their natural defense system, and the country’s economy depends heavily on the health of its reefs and ecosystems.

Several conservation efforts are underway to protect the valuable marine environment of Maldives. While several marine species and birds are protected by law, protected areas have been designated to ensure the conservation of specific ecosystems and the rich biodiversity of the country. This includes designated nature reserves in islands of various atolls to protect wetlands and mangroves and the protection of marine areas and the designation of biosphere reserves that covers coral reefs, islands, seagrass beds, and mangroves.

Several resorts too conduct their own programs. While some programs conducted by resorts focus on the protection and rehabilitation of sea turtles, others are engaged in cutting-edge research on the regeneration of coral reefs. Several community education programs are also conducted by resorts for school children and the community at large. Non-governmental organizations also play an important role through their voluntary programs and conduct regular beach and reef clean-up programs.

Visitors to the Maldives are advised to carry back their own non-biodegradable waste and to take care not to stand on, touch, or remove coral structures while snorkeling or diving.

Sony AI launches the “Gastronomy Flagship Project″ consisting of Research and Development of AI Powered Recipe Creation App, Chef Assisting Cooking Robot and a Community Co-creation Initiative

Tokyo, Japan – Sony Corporation established Sony AI as an internal organization in November 2019 and it became a new company in April 2020 with a global presence in Japan, the United States, and Europe. Sony AI  promotes fundamental research and development of artificial intelligence (AI) and aims to “create AI that unleashes human imagination and creativity.”

In addition to Sony’s existing business areas of “gaming” and “imaging & sensing,” Sony AI has set “gastronomy” as its flagship theme for new technical and business exploration. With the aim of enhancing the creativity and techniques of chefs around the world, the Gastronomy Flagship Project consists of the research and development of an AI application for new recipe creation, a robotics solution that can assist chefs in their cooking process, and a community co-creation initiative that will serve as a foundation to these activities.

In addition to games, Music, and Pictures, Sony AI sees great opportunities in Gastronomy as one of the global creative entertainment domains connecting chefs, who are creators, with their audiences. To this end, Sony AI will pursue its own research and development efforts in partnerships with various collaborators.

AI-Powered Recipe Creation App

Recipe creation is a very challenging research area for AI, as there are infinite possibilities for combinations of ingredients, as well as constraints such as location, climate, season, and a person’s health and food preferences, that must be taken into account.

Sony AI will utilize a variety of data sources – including recipes and ingredient data, such as taste, aroma, flavor, molecular structure, nutrients, etc. – to develop a Recipe Creation App that will be powered by proprietary AI algorithms to assist the world’s top-level chefs in their creative process of ingredient pairing, recipe design, and menu creation.

Through this App, Sony AI aims not only to assist in making delicious food but also to contribute to people’s health and the sustainability of the environment.
