Marriott International, Inc. announced it has signed an agreement in collaboration with Vasilakis SA to bring the JW Marriott brand to Greece. Anticipated to open in 2025, JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa will span 100 acres of coastal beauty and will be a haven for travelers who seek a luxury escape paired with exceptional service and holistic well-being experiences.

SWOT Hospitality, known for its expertise in managing luxury hotels across Greece, will collaborate with Vasilakis SA and Marriott International as the third-party operator for the franchised property.

Designed by acclaimed architecture firm Block722, JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa is anticipated to blend modern elegance with authentic Cretan heritage. The resort is slated to offer 160 stylishly appointed luxury guestrooms with all suites and villas featuring a private pool or jacuzzi.

Design plans for the resort also comprise multiple tranquil wellness spaces inviting guests to fully embrace the here and now including a JW Garden and five culinary experiences, inclusive of a traditional Cretan restaurant and a beach dining venue. Additionally, the property will offer multiple swimming pools, a fitness centre, beach club, spa and Family by JW experiences.

Arne Sorenson, who led Marriott International's transformation into the world's largest hotel chain, has died of cancer at the age of 62.

Arne Sorenson, who led Marriott International's transformation into the world's largest hotel chain, has died of cancer at the age of 62.

Mr Sorenson was the first non-family member to head the company when he became chief executive in 2012.

He steered the firm's 2016 purchase of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, which included brands such as the Westin.

Mr Sorenson, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2019, had reduced his role earlier this month.

"Arne was an exceptional executive - but more than that, he was an exceptional human being," Marriott executive chairman JW Marriott Jr said in a statement announcing the death.

"Arne loved every aspect of this business and relished time spent touring our hotels and meeting associates around the world. He had an uncanny ability to anticipate where the hospitality industry was headed and position Marriott for growth."

Marriott, which has more than 7,500 properties around the world and owns 30 brands, said it planned to appoint a new chief executive in the next two weeks.

'Bravura performance'

Born in Japan, Mr Sorenson was the son and grandson of Lutheran missionaries.

He trained as a lawyer and worked in Washington, DC, where he started to represent Marriott in 1992 before being recruited to work in-house for the company a few years later.

IHG remains optimistic despite $524m drop in revenue

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has posted its financial results up to June 30, 2020, giving an insight into how COVID-19 has hit business.

IHG recorded a severe revenue crash in the first half of the year, falling by 52 percent, the group brought in just US$488 million in the first six months of the year. 

Operating Profit for the same period last year was $410 million, equating to an 82 percent drop.

Marriott is posting new job listings for hotel staff in early sign of recovery

By May 25, 2020, Marriott's Careers website listed 2,031 openings. That's up from a low of 1,764 on May 19, or 267 additional job listings. A large majority of Marriott's hiring recovery appears to be in China, where front-of-house positions from everything including front-desk clerks to massage therapists have begun flooding the company's HR sites.

The company is hiring for as many as 90 new positions at the W Chengdu, 77 at the Shenzhen Renaissance, and another 60 at the Shenyang Marriott.

Marriott announces North American, international leadership changes

Long-time Marriott International senior executive Dave Grissen has decided to step down from his position as group president, the Americas, toward the end of 2020 and retire from Marriott in the first quarter of 2021

Grissen leads all aspects of the company's biggest region, the Americas, which generates more than two-thirds of the company's fee revenues

Under Grissen's leadership, Marriott's Americas organization has grown from 2,928 hotels to 5,640 properties today, with another 1,800 hotels in the pipeline

New North American and International Leadership

Marriott also announced plans for the company's lodging operations to be consolidated under two long-time Marriott leaders after Grissen steps down from his current role. Under this plan, Liam Brown will take on the role of group president, North America and Craig S. Smith will take on the role of group president, International.

Brown currently is group president, Europe, Middle East & Africa. Brown was president, Europe, and before that, president, select brands and owner and franchise services, North America.

The company expects that David Marriott, currently president, U.S. full service, managed by Marriott, will join the company's board of directors in 2021

Hospitality consultancy firm HVS expects mergers and acquisitions in the hospitality space to exceed $ 800 million in 2020, besides a revenue per available room growth in the range of 4.7%-5.4%.

HVS India Hospitality Industry Overview 2019, the company states the hospitality sector witnessed an over 31% growth in brand signings during the year with approximately 171 new hotels entering the branded hotel market and an additional 53 being rebranded.

HVS expects the first half of 2020 to be relatively muted, led by the Coronavirus impact on the global markets and ongoing economic headwinds that are expected to last until March 2020.

As per the HVS report, the India wide revenue per available room grew by just over 4% in 2019. The 2019 revenue per available room at Rs 3967 is still lagging the peak by 27.8%.

Average rates grew by approximately 2.9% in 2019 while the occupancy rate was 66.2% in 2019 vis a vis 65.4% in 2018.

HVS stated that domestic brands with their aggressive growth strategies have overtaken international brands in terms of brand signings for 2019. Though, they continue to sign smaller format hotels with average keys for domestic brand signings being almost half of their international peers.

As per the HVS report, IHCL, The Fern Hotels & Resorts, Clarks Inn, Intellistay Hotels and Marriott International were the top five operators in 2019 in terms of brand signings by properties.


Goa and Bengaluru remained the top markets for brand signings. Increasing supply poses a concern for the Goa hotel market performance in the near future, as per the report.
