Delhi HC sets aside arbitral award and dismisses execution petition by Zostel in a win for OYO

May, New Delhi: Global travel-tech company OYO announced on Tuesday that the Honourable Delhi High Court has set aside an arbitral award in its dispute with Zostel Hospitality, ruling that it did not act in breach of an agreement following acquisition discussions with Zostel, which owns ZO Rooms.

The Delhi High Court's order substantiates OYO’s position that no part of Zostel's business was transferred to OYO and that a determinable contract cannot be specifically enforced, in line with established precedents from the Supreme Court of India. It also dismissed Zostel's execution petition.

The dispute originated in November 2015 when OYO signed an exploratory non-binding term sheet with Zostel to potentially acquire their business. However, the transaction did not materialise due to failure of the due diligence process and lack of consensus in the deal terms documentation.

Zostel initiated arbitration proceedings almost three years later in September 2018, leading to a March 2021 arbitral award that OYO promptly challenged. Throughout the legal battle, OYO maintained its position successfully, with the Delhi High Court dismissing Zostel's application for injunction in February 2022.

This ruling vindicates OYO’s position and puts to rest the contention that there was any binding, definitive agreement between the parties. The court has recognised that no definitive agreements were executed, no consensus was reached, and essential commercial aspects of the potential transaction were never finalised.

IHM Ranchi Bags CSR Top Hotel Management Institute of India Award 2025

The Institute of Hotel Management (IHM), Ranchi has once again proven its academic and professional excellence by securing the “CSR Top Hotel Management Institute of India Award” for the year 2025. The recognition was bestowed by Competition Success Review (CSR), one of India’s most prestigious career and education magazines, during a formal award ceremony held at Hotel Le Meridien, Windsor Palace, Janpath, New Delhi on 20th April 2025. ASPHL has incorporated sustainable practices such as utilization of renewable energy sources, optimized energy usage, waste recycling and reduction programmes, implementing various water conservation measures to name a few initiatives and innovations that have played an active role in mitigating the environmental impact.

ASPHL is currently in the process of adopting and implementing efficient environmentally friendly green technologies that utilize renewable, emission-free, and clean energy sources like wind to meet electrical consumption needs. We have transitioned to 100 % LED light fixtures and are upgrading to energy-efficient equipment. Two hotels of ASPHL are operating of 100% green energy.

All other Hotels will be energy neutral by 2027.

 

APSHL is dedicated to achieving a 100% single-use plastic free environment to drive conscious consumptions by adopting alternate sustainable options that are biodegradable. We use advanced water treatment and purification technologies to eradicate the use of plastic water bottles that are replaced with glass water bottles amounting to 12 lakh bottles per year.

With the transition to heat pumps replacing hot water boilers and launching EV Fleet across all locations towards the Company’s planet positive initiatives has led to a savings of 4.50 lacs litres of diesel annually. By 2027, all hotels will operate with a fully electric fleet, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability

Prof. Sudhir Andrews is a highly esteemed figure in the hospitality industry, renowned for his extensive contributions to education and training. As an accomplished author, Prof. Andrews has penned 11 books that are widely recognized and recommended as textbooks in Hotel Management colleges across India. His contributions to hospitality education have earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious 'Rashtriya Gaurav Award' and the 'Rajiv Gandhi Award,' among others. 

 During the inaugural ceremony, Prof. Andrews delivered a keynote speech on the future of AI for the hospitality sector. He highlighted how AI technologies can enhance operational efficiency, improve customer experiences, and drive sustainable practices within the industry. Prof. Andrews emphasized the urgent need for the industry to adapt to changing consumer expectations and environmental challenges. He encouraged students and industry professionals alike to embrace innovative technologies while prioritizing sustainable practices that contribute to the well-being of communities and the planet.

Last year the prestigious lifetime achievement award was conferred to Mr. S.K. Mishra, former IAS, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Government of India. He was Awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2009.

AISATS' AeroWash was selected as a winner among more than 1,200 nominations in the competitive International Green Apple Awards, organized by The Green Organisation.
