https://www.breakingtravelnews.com/news/article/accor-deal-with-intercontinental-could-lead-to-wave-of-consolidation/

Rumors of a merger between Accor and InterContinental Hotels Group could foreshadow a wave of acquisitions in the hospitality industry.

The two giants have reportedly discussed a deal internally, though no official moves have been made.

Ralph Hollister, a tourism analyst at GlobalData, explained: “Although this deal seems to be just speculation, the enormity of this potential merger proves that industry consolidation could be accelerated due to behemoths acquiring, merging or striking partnerships with each other to increase market share.”

He added: “Many reasons for a merger between the two companies make the prospect plausible, especially during the current Covid-19 induced economic downturn, during which both companies have experienced significant losses.

“A major reason for this merger would be that th

e newly formed company could achieve savings in central costs.

Revealed: Accor and IHG considered merger

Revealed: Accor and IHG considered merger

French hospitality company Accor considered a possible merger with the UK’s InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) – which would have created the world’s largest hospitality company.

French newspaper Le Figaro reported the news, which was then reported by Bloomberg.

it said that Accor Chief Executive Officer Sebastien Bazin created a team in June that included Chief Financial Officer Jean-Jacques Morin and bankers from Centerview and Rothschild, to look into a possible deal.

Accor’s board was in favour of the idea, but Bazin put the project on hold as he thought it wasn’t the right time.

According to Reuters, an Accor-IHG merger would create a US$17 billion super-firm of more than 11,000 hotels. A merger would also put the two firms ahead of rival Marriott in terms of rooms, with more than 1.6 million between them.

A merger would bring together IHG brands such as Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza with Accor’s Raffles, Sofitel and Ibis. It would also save on HQ expenses and loyalty programs, said Le Figaro.

Accor and Bureau Veritas launch a label based on sanitary measures

Accor, a global leader in augmented hospitality, and Bureau Veritas, a world-leading provider in testing, inspection and certification, have joined forces to develop a label designed to certify that the appropriate safety standards and cleaning protocols have been achieved to allow businesses to reopen

Accor to launch cleaning standards certification 'label' post-coronavirus lockdown

Accor has partnered with testing, inspection and certification provider Bureau Veritas to develop a ‘label’ certifying that appropriate safety standards and cleaning protocols have been achieved.

Accor said that the project had been carried out in partnership with doctors and epidemiologists, and had been developed in collaboration with Accor owners and trade associations.

India's top hotels will now deliver meals at lower rates amid lockdown

With social distancing becoming the new normal, hotels such as Indian Hotels, Marriott, Grand Hyatt and Accor Group Hotels are ensuring their meals reach the doorsteps of guests. For an industry that counts heavily on the overall experience, a personalised touch and ambience to pamper its guests, this is a first.

Guests can choose their favourite cuisines from a specially curated compact menu at a tad lower price than what they would have paid when dining at the hotel restaurants.

The owner of Taj hotels is offering confectionary and gourmet hampers and a hamper for spa at home

Marriott International, the world's largest hotel chain, too, is pulling all plugs for its guests to beat the lockdown blues. Its brands including JW Marriott, Sheraton, Ritz Carlton, and Four Points are giving the guests an option for a take away or home delivery.

The hotels have introduced a compact menu of their signature dishes and are already seeing a positive response from local residents in their vicinity, she said. Stringent checks and safety measures are being taken while preparing, packaging and delivering these meals across homes.
