400 people -- Seychellois and foreigners -- have lost jobs in tourism downturn

Nearly 230 Seychellois and more than 170 foreigners in the tourism sector in Seychelles have lost their jobs due to the economic downturn as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Employment Minister, Miriam Telemaque, told SNA that out of the 100 applications, 33 have been processed and approved leading to 171 expatriates and around 228 Seychellois losing their employment.

To cushion some of the financial impacts on employment, the government set up a Financial Assistance for Job Retention scheme to guarantee salary payments for employees and self-employed individuals, for both local and expatriates, from April to the end of June 2020.

"Eat out to help out" - Britain aids hospitality sector with voucher scheme

Britain’s government will hand out vouchers worth 500 million pounds ($625 million) to the public to boost spending at restaurants, cafes, and pubs that have been hit hard by the COVID-19 lockdown. For the month of August, everyone in the country will be given an “Eat Out to Help Out discount” voucher.

Britain’s foodservice industry, which employed 1.8 million people before the crisis, has suffered thousands of job cuts, with layoffs announced by firms including the owner of the Upper Crust and Caffe Ritazza chains and Pret A Manger.

Kolkata's five-star Swissotel shuts amid contract expiry

Hit by the Coronavirus-triggered economic crisis, five-star Swissotel in Kolkata temporarily shut operations amid the contract between its owner Ambuja Neotia Group and French hospitality chain Accor expiring. The contract expired on June 30 after ten years of operating the hotel.

Following the closure of operations, 250 employees of the hotel have been sent on furlough with subsistence allowance.

Miami rolls back restaurant dining as U.S. coronavirus deaths top 130,000

Florida’s greater Miami area became the latest U.S. Coronavirus hot spot to roll back its reopening, ordering restaurant dining closed as COVID-19 cases surged nationwide by the tens of thousands and the U.S. death toll topped 130,000 and according to latest update is raised to 1,33,000.

California, Texas and Florida are all among two dozen states reporting high infection rates as a percentage of diagnostic tests conducted over the past week.

Marriott to expand, continue food delivery biz even after COVID-19

Leading hotel chain Marriott International, which has seen its business plunge over 90 percent across its 123 properties since the lockdown, will expand and continue it’s delivery and takeaway business even after the pandemic-induced lockdown and social distancing end, as it does not see normalcy turtling back anytime soon.

As the lockdown was extended four times, the hotel explored newer options and landed upon the idea of home delivery of food under a new vertical ''Marriott on Wheels'' and soon it roped in food delivery chains Zomato and Swiggy and is keen to continue and expand this model in the long term.

On May 13, Marriott, in a novel initiative, tied up with food delivery firm Swiggy as part of expanding the Marriott on Wheels delivery service, offering over 20 hotels.

Punjab moves towards further reopening, allows restaurant dine-in, marriage halls at 50% capacity

The Punjab government moved towards the further reopening of the economy, allowing hotels, restaurants, and marriage halls to operate at 50 percent capacity, with strict adherence to social-distancing norms and other health protocols.

Sri Lanka to open Borders for Tourists on 1st August with 100$ Visa Fee, Minimum 5 Days Stay and COVID Test on Arrival

NCHM JEE 2020 postponed; NTA to announce new dates for Hotel Management entrance exam soon

National Council for Hotel Management Joint Entrance Examination or NCHM JEE 2020  were scheduled to be conducted on June 22 after it was deferred. Initially, the NCHM JEE 2020 was supposed to be held on May 5. The entrance exam dates were postponed twice by National Testing Agency (NTA) in the wake of the coronavirus situation in the country. 

As per the official notification, the NCHM JEE 2020 Admit Cards will be released 15 days prior to the date of examination on the official websites -- nta.ac.in or nchmjee.nta.nic.in.

18 percent restaurants may not restart post lockdown

Hospitality sector alarmed by orders from state authorities, not getting paid for services rendered

The hospitality industry has raised concerns about 'high-handed' state government orders to requisition hotels as quarantine or treatment centers, and hoteliers not being compensated for the services offered through the lockdown.
On May 29, the Delhi government requisitioned five hotels through an order to convert them into extended Covid-19 hospitals, a move that took hoteliers by surprise.

The court directed the government to appoint an expert committee to examine the issue and to deal with the petitioner's representation. The matter stands adjourned to June 9.

The head of a hotel chain said his entire hotel has been taken over by state authorities in Madhya Pradesh and he had not been paid.
