In collaboration with local authorities, environmental organizations, NGOs, and community partners, tree plantation drives were conducted across multiple cities and regions in India. ‘Small request’ sparks lifeline for vulnerable girls in Mara

Mugumu, Tanzania: What began as a simple, hopeful request at a medical camp has blossomed into a transformative, global initiative that is rewriting the futures of vulnerable girls in Mugumu, Mara Region.

When the Give a Future Foundation hosted one of its free medical camps in northern Tanzania, representatives from the Hope for Girls Centre approached the organizers with a modest question: “Would it be possible for our girls to attend?”

The response from Rishen Patel, founder of Delaware Investments and the Give a Future Foundation, was immediate and unconditional: “Bring everyone.”

That single moment marked the birth of a profound partnership. What started as healthcare outreach quickly evolved into a comprehensive support system for more than 100 girls who have fled, or are at high risk of, female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage, and other systemic abuses.

The Hope for Girls Centre serves as a critical sanctuary, offering refuge, protection, and education to those escaping harmful traditional practices. Despite the profound trauma of their pasts, the girls remain fiercely focused on their futures, attending school, forging lifelong friendships, and reclaiming their agency.

Reflecting on his first visit to the shelter, Patel recalled how deeply he was moved by their spirit.

“When I first visited the center, what struck me wasn’t the hardship, it was the resilience of the girls,” Patel said.

“Despite everything they had been through, they were smiling, studying, dreaming, and planning their futures. I left knowing we had a responsibility to do more. What has amazed me most since then is how many people have stepped forward and asked the same question: ‘How can I help?’”

As word spread, the influx of girls seeking safety began to strain the center's limited resources. More than 100 girls were living in cramped, rented accommodations, making the need for a permanent, spacious, and sustainable sanctuary increasingly urgent.

The turning point came in 2025. During a trip to the Serengeti, Indian film icon and philanthropist Nagarjuna Akkineni learned about the center and asked to visit. Moved by the girls' courage and the staff's dedication, Nagarjuna immediately stepped up, pledging to cover the food expenses for all the girls at the center for an entire year.

But his commitment did not stop there. As discussions turned toward building a permanent home for the girls, Nagarjuna pledged significant financial backing to help turn that dream into reality.

This new, permanent campus is designed to be far more than just a shelter. It is envisioned as a holistic, self-sustaining community featuring modern residential dormitories, classrooms, vocational and skills-training workshops, a library, healthcare facilities, sports and recreation areas, and agricultural spaces to support long-term food security. It will be a place where young women can heal, learn, and cultivate the skills needed to build independent lives.

For Rhobi Samwelly, an FGM survivor and the visionary founder of Hope for Girls and Women in Tanzania, this upcoming milestone represents the culmination of a lifetime of advocacy and personal sacrifice.

“I was cut because when I was a girl, no safe house existed for me to run to. That pain is why I build safe houses today. I give thanks to Mapito Safari Camp Serengeti, Give a Future Foundation, Nagarjuna, and all who work for free and donate. Because of you, construction of the modern Serengeti Safe House Complex will start soon,” says Rhobi Samwelly, FGM Survivor & Founder, Hope for Girls and Women in Tanzania.

The momentum surrounding the project has ignited a true community movement. Among the key local supporters is the team at Mapito Safari Camp, whose staff regularly volunteers at the center. They provide hands-on mentorship, life skills, and practical vocational training to complement the girls' formal education.

What makes this project truly extraordinary is its collaborative spirit. It has united a diverse, global network of allies—from corporate leaders and international philanthropists to local community volunteers and wilderness camps—all bound by the shared conviction that every girl deserves a safe place to grow.

Featuring participation from over 500 chefs across TFS, Goa Mopa and Hyderabad airport lounges (GHLs) and Semolina Kitchens, the competition culminated in Mumbai on June 2, 2026, where Elangovan K from Chennai was crowned the national winner, alongside four other top-performing chefs and three Wild Card award recipients.

 Designed to recognise, nurture and elevate culinary talent across the organisation, MasterChef 2.0 challenged participants through multiple rounds of competition, with the top 40 finalists advancing to the national finale. Centred around the theme "Fast. Smart. Sustainable.", this year's edition highlighted the evolving demands of modern airport food and beverage operations, where innovation, efficiency, guest experience and sustainability are increasingly shaping culinary excellence.

 The competition unfolded through multiple stages, including video submissions, screening rounds and regional contests, before culminating in the national finale. Participants were evaluated through challenges designed to simulate real-world food service environments, including the Waste-to-Wow Challenge, focused on sustainability and ingredient optimisation; the Mystery Box Challenge, which tested adaptability and creativity under pressure; and the Signature Dish Challenge, where chefs showcased their culinary expertise through innovation, presentation and storytelling.

 Finalists were assessed on a range of parameters, including culinary skill, creativity, taste, presentation, sustainability, speed of execution and commercial viability.

Beyond recognising excellence, MasterChef 2.0 serves as a platform for identifying future culinary leaders, encouraging innovation and strengthening a culture of learning and continuous improvement across the TFS ecosystem. The company is also exploring opportunities for the winners to conduct knowledge-sharing sessions and culinary workshops with teams across locations.

Tourism Australia Strengthens Business Events Presence in India with New Appointment and Boosted Bid Fund

Mumbai, India | June 2026: Tourism Australia’s dedicated business events division, Business Events Australia, has strengthened its presence in India with the appointment of Sharmishtha Patange as Business Events Manager – India, effective 8 June 2026. Sharmishtha will support the implementation of Business Events Australia’s distribution strategies and partnerships across India’s MICE industry while working closely with key customers and stakeholders to drive business events and incentive travel to Australia.

The appointment comes as Business Events Australia expands its focus on the Indian market and introduces new support for events from India through its Business Events Bid Fund Program (BFP). The program is designed to help event planners and corporate clients choose Australia for large-scale business events and incentive travel by providing financial assistance towards event delivery costs. For the Indian market, new subvention funding has been introduced for short-term incentive groups of at least 400 delegates travelling to Australia before 31 May 2027. The funding can be used to offset on-ground expenses such as accommodation, venue hire and transport, making it easier and more attractive for organisations to host incentive events in Australia.

India continues to be a strong growth market for Australia’s business events sector. According to Tourism Research Australia’s latest International Visitor Survey data, business events visitation from India increased by 9 per cent year-on-year in 2025, with 44,417 business delegates travelling to Australia. Total expenditure grew by 12 per cent year-on-year, reaching nearly AUD 279 million.

International Bharatanatyam Artist Apeksha Niranjan to Mark Her 50th Recital in Poland with a Special Indo-Polish Musical Collaboration

Internationally acclaimed Bharatanatyam artist Apeksha Niranjan is set to present a landmark performance in Poland on 8th June, marking her 50th recital in the country — a significant milestone in her artistic journey and her long-standing cultural association with Poland.

The special performance will feature a unique collaboration with Polish and Indian musicians, bringing together the rhythmic sophistication of Bharatanatyam with the musical traditions of both nations. Through this cross-cultural production, Apeksha continues her artistic vision of building bridges between India and Poland through dance, music, and storytelling.

Known for her deeply expressive performances and innovative choreographies, Apeksha Niranjan has consistently explored artistic dialogues between Indian classical traditions and Polish cultural narratives. Her previous productions have successfully incorporated Polish folk music, Gregorian chants, Marathi abhangas, and thematic explorations rooted in shared human emotions and histories.

Born into a unique Indo-Polish heritage, with a Polish grandmother and Maharashtrian roots, Apeksha’s artistic journey has been closely intertwined with Poland over the years. Her performances have become symbolic of the enduring cultural relationship between the two countries.

Mumbai Port Authority Plants 1,500 Trees on World Environment Day under Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam

Plantation drive held at Cotton Green and Sewri East to support green cover and public participation in environmental care

Mumbai Port Authority organised a tree plantation drive on World Environment Day 2026 under the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative, reinforcing the message that caring for the environment begins with individual responsibility and collective action.

The plantation programme was organised by the Civil Engineering Department of Mumbai Port Authority at two locations. A total of 1,500 plantations were undertaken as part of the drive, including 500 trees at Ram Mandir, Cotton Green East, and 1,000 bamboo plants along the footpaths at Sewri Gadi Adda, below Atal Setu, Sewri East.

The first plantation activity was held at Ram Mandir, Cotton Green East, Mumbai 400033, in association with FICCI FLO. The second activity was held at Sewri Gadi Adda, below Atal Setu, Sewri East, Mumbai 400015, in association with the Director General of Shipping and Amazing Nautical Association.

The initiative carries a larger public message beyond plantation numbers. Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam encourages citizens to plant a tree in honour of their mother and, through that gesture, recognise the nurturing role of nature in everyday life. The drive also reflects Mumbai Port Authority’s effort to contribute to greener public spaces in areas connected with the port and the city.

Bahekar, Secretary, Mumbai Port Authority, said, “A tree planted in the name of one’s mother is not only a tribute, it is a promise to protect life, nurture nature and leave behind a healthier environment for the next generation. The bamboo plantation at Sewri East will add to the greenery along a key public movement corridor near Atal Setu, while the plantation at Cotton Green will support green cover in a port-linked urban area.
