Oyo sees signs of recovery in China after coronavirus outbreak

Oyo Hotels and Homes has started to see a recovery in bookings in China, its second-largest market, as the coronavirus outbreak eases up in some parts of the country, the Indian hospitality startup’s Chief Executive Ritesh Agarwal

A rise in imported coronavirus cases and the lifting of restrictions on movement in some cities in China have raised the prospect of a second wave of infections that could thwart the country’s economic recovery

Oyo, which is backed by Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp , has cut thousands of jobs this year, including in China, as the company focuses on becoming profitable and grapples with the coronavirus outbreak.

Oyo would offer free accommodation at its roughly 300 U.S. hotels to doctors, nurses and other medical first responders who are helping to tackle the coronavirus outbreak.

Making productive use of the slowdown due to Covid19. A special contribution by Aditya Shamsher Malla, General Manager, DoubleTree by Hilton

The current lockdown and slowdown in business across the globe even are unprecedented.

I doubt any of us in leadership roles currently would be able to call upon similar experience to ascertain the best way to deal with this situation.

As we are all doing our bit in the learning curve, I thought of sharing a few activities we are keeping ourselves busy with, after taking necessary steps to cut overheads including planned leaves, floor shutdowns, section closures etc. With the numbers down to skeletal staff and only a handful of guests in the house, if at all, my team decided to use this opportunity productively.

Sharing some insights:

  1. Cleaning and Maintenance: Divided into small, cross-functional groups, we dedicate a significant time in the day to clean specific areas of the hotel looking out for repair or maintenance issues. This helps to keep the rooms and public areas of the hotel in good condition even while not in regular use. One team addresses Heart of the House areas like walk-ins, lockers and stores to undertake deep cleaning and reorganisation.

  2. Tending to our Chef’s Kitchen Garden. Plucking the fresh vegetables helps the kitchen too! Involving some interested guests in this activity adds to the fun.

  3. Reading and online Training: Most of our Team members on shift have an exhaustive reading list. With the supply of newspaper disrupted, we spend a couple of hours reading and taking some interesting courses from the online Hilton University - sharpening the saw!

  4. Cooking: we take turns to lend a hand in the only operating kitchen to ensure the team members dining at Adda, our Team Members’ restaurant get a varied taste. The other day our Chief Engineer cooked some home-style biryani for all of us! A rare treat!!

  5. Exercise: we take out a few minutes to exercise within the confines of our office or within the hotel compound to ensure we remain physically agile.

I am sure with time, hotel teams will come up with innovative ways to keep in step with team engagement and maintenance of the property.

How Should Hotels Set Room Rates Now and After the Coronavirus Crisis?

It may seem off-topic to ask experts for advice on how hotels should be setting their room rates right now. Thousands of hotels are closing in Europe and the U.S., and the goal for many properties is to survive

Yet most hotels will re-open someday. Most hotels will also continue to accept reservations for stays many months from now. So it’s urgent to price those future stays smartly.

TAKE HEART FROM ASIA

“Asia-Pacific learned a lot by going through the SARS experience, and as a result, most had a plan for facing some of the same challenges”

Westerners have been more quick, on average, to cut rates to stimulate demand, while operators in Asia-Pacific have favored other measures.

A case in point: About half of Asia-Pacific hoteliers tried “value-adds,” compared with only a third in Europe. An example of a “value-add” could be offering any guest who stays a voucher for, say, a substantial credit if they rebook a future stay within a year, or it could be offering a free airport transport in a well-sanitized vehicle.

Asia-Pacific hoteliers were significantly more likely than ones elsewhere in this crisis to emphasize promotions targeted to new segments of customers than their hotels typically have sought. They also have more been more likely to take steps to try to reward loyal, or potentially repeat, customers.

MAINTAIN PRICING POWER IF AT ALL POSSIBLE

“Studies have shown that hotels that are the fastest to drop their rates and who drop their rates the deepest can be the last ones to recover when demand comes back,” said Dan Skodol, a hospitality and travel industry revenue management, pricing, and analytics expert at Cendyn

Yet despite being hard advice to swallow, rate-cutting has long-term consequences.

“One reason is that the pricing structure of many hotels is based on a ‘best available retail rate,’ meaning that all the other rates, such as for business, group, and so on, are tied to it,” Isaac said. “When demand comes back, the more lucrative customers like business travelers and event or wedding planners will be reticent to accept price hikes.”

“But discounts are useless if people aren’t traveling for safety concerns,” Schultz said. “We want to make sure that when demand does come back, we’re sure not to be missing any dollar by having gone too low.”

THINK BEYOND THE RATES

“Guests will remember their cancellation experience more so than the rate they paid,” said Mike Chuma, vice president, global marketing, enablement and engagement at IDeaS, a software maker. “When circumstances permit, offer flexible policies to cancellations, such as offer hassle-free credits or complimentary amenities for future stays.”

The pace of recovery is something to keep in mind when figuring out who to spend your scarce marketing dollars on targeting.

Marketers will need to adapt relevant pitches as social distancing remains an on-again-off-again issue for the next year or longer.

“Showing a big group of people hugging and high-fiving is likely not the best image in these times,” Lugli said.

Looking at new segments to target with marketing might mean a hotel that usually caters to leisure travelers pitching their rooms on platforms for business travelers seeking extended stay and corporate relocation

If you need hope, look to China, where occupancy has begun to rebound. China saw hotel occupancy nearly vanish during the worst of the crisis, but a recovery is beginning to emerge, according to new data from tech vendor Shiji Distribution. Occupancy levels vary, but in some cities have recovered from low single digit percentages to around 30 percent.

Outside of China, Asia-Pacific hotels are also seeing the green shoots of recovery, according to data from the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI) and tech vendor RateGain.

Hotels may see 20-40% fall in occupancy rates in Mar-May due to COVID-19

Hotels in India are staring at a steep 20 to 40 per cent fall in occupancy rates during the three months ending May as lockdowns due to COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

While the plunge in occupancy could be 30-40 per cent for mid-scale and two-star hotels, the same for four-star hotels and above categories could be 20-25 per cent for the next three months beginning March -- which is peak season due to summer holidays and weddings, citing the increasing number of cities going under full or partial lockdowns.

On revenue side, hotels under the four-star or above categories could see 65-70 per cent fall in revenue per available room, while for two-star hotels it could be 50-60 per cent.

During the global financial crisis, the average absolute occupancy rates fell by over 9 per cent, with the highest fall being 10.40 per cent for four-star and above hotels, followed by three-stars at 8.5 per cent.

Markets like Singapore, Indonesia and Hong Kong, where the outbreak began in January, have seen sharp decline in occupancy rates -- much higher than seen during the SARS outbreak in 2003 when it fell to sub-20 per cent from around 70 per cent in China.

COVID-19: Hospitality Industry Seeks PM's Help

The Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism and Hospitality (FAITH), the nodal agency and policy federation of all the national associations representing the tourism, travel and hospitality industry has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating the tourism industry is in dire straits because of the COVID-19 pandemic

With declining revenues almost all tourism businesses are running out of working capital

In the letter, FAITH has requested for a complete GST tax holiday for the tourism, travel and hospitality industry for twelve months.

"With almost nil revenues there is hardly going to be any GST collection,"

FAITH said as a result of this pandemic, the Indian tourism industry is looking at pan India bankruptcies, closure of businesses and mass unemployment. "It is believed that around 70% out of a total estimated workforce of 5.5 crore (direct and indirect) could get unemployed (3.8 crore). This effect of job losses and layoffs has already begun throughout the country," the letter stated.
The federation has also requested for a twelve months' moratorium on EMIs of principle and interest payments on loans and working capital from financial institutions besides a doubling of working capital limits on interest free and collateral free terms."This will prevent all our tourism businesses from going bankrupt,"

FAITH has also sought a support fund for 12 months on the lines of MNREGA to support basic salaries with direct transfers to affected tourism employees.

Setting up of a national tourism task force under PM's leadership to fast track all tourism investment proposals and to withhold the tax collected at source (TCS) on travel provision proposed in Finance Bill 2020 which is to be introduced from April 1.FAITH believes TCS on travel will displace business from India to overseas markets

A deferment of twelve months for all statutory dues

Release of SEIS and EPCG schemes on an urgent basis based on last year's submissions of foreign exchange earnings of companies at an enhanced rate of 10%, GST refunds on MICE cancelled events, a six to nine months' moratorium on all working capital principle, interest payments on loans and overdrafts bringing in liquidity
